Audigy2. End of advice.

As much as I hate to say it, I've had good results with an ancient (and
now rather cheap) SB-Live. Make sure you get the insallation CD with
the card, the SOB's at Creative won't make functional installation
drivers available. At least the W98 drivers... they don't recognise the
card as 'Genuine Creative' or some such crap.
I'd never pay Creative 60+ bucks for an Audigy.
-Greg
Besides, it's not the quality of the sound that's an issue here, it's the
game settings that are adding reverb and/or determining surround-sound
effects.

Well, then, that is a problem. I haven't touched my sound settings
since installation. I don't have a clue in that area. I will say
tho...that the newer video cards are power sluts. THe Nvidia 6800 is
recommending power supplies of 480 watts. If possible, I'd try and find
a way to upgrade that 220 unit. Good luck.
dave henrie
You can't upgrade the PSU in a SFF unit like the Shuttle (or in the case of
the Fragbox, the Ice). Besides, the FBP is designed that way (to work w. a
nV 5950) and I don't question the expertise of Falcon NW enuf to change it.
Since nobody seemed to have any quick answers, I did some experiments on my
own.
In the core.ini file, there's a [Sound] stanza that looks like this outta
the box:
*************************
allow_buffer_recreation=0
; re-create sound buffers to improve quality
convert_3d_stereo=1
; convert stereo to mono for positional sounds in 3d mode
enable_3d_interpolation=1
; enable volume interpolation for 3d sound
force_default_buffer_size=0
; Set forced buffer size in 1/36 second units. Define a value of 3 or larger
force_min_readahead=3.000000
; Set forced read ahead, expressed in 1/36 second ticks.
interpolationValue=0
*************************
Changing "allow_buffer_recreation" to a value of 1 to "improve quality"
results in a gawdawful reverb effect.
Note that the default value for "force_default_buffer_size" is zero, despite
the admonition to "define a value of 3 or larger."
Changing the value to 3 seems to have no effect whatsoever.
Feel free to post empirical results of yer own.

Good luck!

The Fragbox is only a week or two old, so I doubt that the drivers are
out-of-date; Falcon NW is famous for tweaking every computer they sell (you
get a lab print-out of all the tests they've performed on *your* unit).
Could be, tho. I'm getting some flashing in N2003, so FNW might not have
used the latest nVidia drivers...altho I'm reluctant to mess w. what is
otherwise a splendid machine (2.4-MHz P4, gig of 3200 RAM, the 5950 Ultra,
1394, USB 2.0, 120-gig WD Spl. Ed., etc.). It runs like Jacques le Ursine
with GTR, for example (and Far Cry, CoD, FS2004, and LOMAC). It has enuf
juice left over that I could prolly throw in my mAudio 7.1 Revolution
(infamous as a fps-eater) and still turn everything up to "11".
Going back to the N2003 defaults cured most of the sound probs. That...and
unchecking the "3D Sound" box in the Options/Sound menu. (Where do they
*get* these people?)
--Steve
default to the Quarry setting in the sound effects.
this was to open N2003 hold down the alt key and
the taskbar and change from Quarry to none and
Geez Steve, that part was soooo common knowledge I figured you had
already done that....NOBODY runs with 3dsound checked. Well almost
nobody...:)
dh
the latest version of the nForce mobo drivers is 4.24, and in the recent
months new version have brought great improvements especially in the
sound section.
I'd check the drivers.

Thx, Achim
The AC97 audio is VIA, not nVidia (nForce), and I've already got the 3.90a
drivers.
How's the arm?
