   turn down the soundcard's hardware acceleration in the properties under
device manager(I think!)  move it down one notch, test gpl if it still
crackles...move it down another notch  repeat...

I tried that, still hear crackles.  Turned down the sample rate
conversion quality too.  Turned down volume.  I never had problems
before when I was using my onboard sound.  It's not just the crackles.
If I crash the car and flip it a few times, the engine sounds muffled,
when I hit F2 to initiate the replay and resume, the sound is back to
normal again.
