N2003 demo - no sound on Dell notebook

I did a google search but didn't find any hints for *no* sound, only bad
sound.  The computer is a Dell 4100 notebook, with GeForce2Go (GeForce2MX)
graphics and some kind of generic Cirrus Logics sound chip.  The framerate
is great, the game looks good, but it's awfully quiet in there...

The initial sound test during install works.  Any ideas?
