GPL on Dell I5000 notebook (ATi Rage Mobility-P)..?

Anyone out there who managed to get GPL running on a Dell Inspiron 5000? I
just got one, and got several games running quite well, except my
favorite... It runs acceptably on my desktop PC, with a V550 and the OpenGL
patch, but on the Dell I haven't succeeded yet.

I tried several Glide wrappers, and a few different drivers for the ATi, but
so far nothing goes except software mode.

I tried to get it running on my Dell I3800, but no joy - I think that ATI
chipsets are well-nigh incompatible with the OpenGL patch.

Sorry.

It might work with the new ATI Mobility 128, as it works with the desktop
Rage 128 which has the same core, but only time will tell as the chip is
only now shipping in high-end ThinkPads.

I already thought it would be tough, judging from previous posts in this NG.
But I don't feel like trading in my brand new Dell just yet. I guess I could
dedicate my desktop machine entirely to GPL now. Anything else seems to run
quite nicely on the Dell.

But is it really the ATi, or the GPL patch that is to blame? I guess there's
no chance of an updated/improved openGL patch for GPL?

It's the ATI - the drivers just don't have robust enough support of OpenGL.
Admittedly, the OpenGL patch seems to have been written almost specifically
for Nvidia hardware, but I think that stems more from Nvidia writing better
GL drivers than anybody else on the "consumer" level boards.

Who knows.  Quake3 and Half-Life run flawlessly in OGL on my Toshiba
notebook with its Savage Mobile chip (ok, it's not a GeForce, but I get up
to 60fps with some tweaking at 640x480x32 on a PIII *notebook* and the smoke
and lighting look good), but no luck with GPL.  There are drivers for the
Rage (www.rage3d.com) that do a better job with OGL, but I never had any joy
with them and GPL.

Forget about the never-coming patch, build up your desktop into a GPL
machine (as you really need a wheel to do it justice) and have fun on the
notebook with NFS:Porsche etc.  That's what I do.
