GPL and laptops - ATI Mobility Radeon vs. GeForce Go

by Stev » Thu, 08 Nov 2001 08:06:21

Hello!

I am trying to determine whether or not to buy a Compaq Presario 2700,
P-III M 866 mhz, 256 MB RAM with a 32 MB ATI Mobility Radeon video
card that I can get through Best Buy with no interest financing for a
year.  My other option, the Dell 8100 with the 32 MB GeForce Go card,
obviously doesn't offer financing like this and I don't get as much
system for the price (aside from the GeForce card).

I realize the GeForce Go is about the best you can get in a notebook
these days, but would the ATI Mobility Radeon run GPL with at least
some of the add-ons without taking much of a frame rate hit?  Is
anyone running GPL with a laptop/ATI Mobility Radeon combination?

Thanks,
Steve

Buy them both, test GPL, return the one with the poorest frame rate for a
refund, post the results for the rest of us.  ;)

GPL and laptops - ATI Mobility Radeon vs. GeForce Go

I am successfully running GPL on a laptop with GeForce2 Go video card, specs
as follows:

Dell Inspiron 8000 (1GHz)
256 Mb RAM
32 Mb GeForce2 Go card using driver version 7.84
Win2k Pro with Service Pack 1
LWFF with Wingman Profiler version 4.00

I get 36 fps in***pit view most of  the time except for when in the pits
or at the start of large grid races (15+ drivers) where it drops to 25-31
fps.  This is at 1280*1024 with full detail including mirrors.

The only drawback is that the track textures are a bit pixellated at some of
the tracks. If anyone can help with this I would appreciate it.

I have also found that GPL will not run in this configuration unless the 1.2
patch is applied - it just hangs at the splash screen for a couple of
seconds then drops out.

Hope this helps

Rod

Rod, that's a great looking system.  I went ahead and ordered the
Compaq Presario 2700T with 256 MB RAM, 32 MB ATI Mobility Radeon and
15" XGA screen.  The decision was made easier for me in that I could
delay having to pay the whole thing off from three months (through
Dell) to 12 months to avoid the finance charges.

So, we'll soon see if the Radeon can come somewhat close to the
performance of the GeForce Go in running GPL.  I don't expect it to,
I'm just looking for around 30+ fps most of the time with only some of
the add-ons.

And, sorry Art, I'm not that rich! ;-)

Thanks for the reply,
Steve

Put them both on your credit card and return the slow one before the
statement is due.

Seriously, post your results I'm in the same boat.
