ATI Radeon 8500 and GPL

Ladies and Gentlemen,

I just bought a Radeon 8500 last friday, set it up and tried all
the games on it. GPL was working fine. I just tried it again today, and
the menu screens are melting. It looks just like one of those
screensavers that melts your desktop.

I have of course been messing around in the ATI display property
menus trying out all the new gadgets avail to me. But seeing this problem
come up, I have attempted to put everything back to default. No go.

Anyone have any clue as to what I have done and how to correct it?

I've seen something similar once with my Radeon 32DDR... the display font is
messed up.  But in my case it was an immediate effect not as you describe.
If you get into the game with the D3D renderer you may also notice a black
speedo with a fat white needle.

Anyway... what I did:

What I had to do was uninstall the card from Device Manager, uninstall the
ATi software, boot into safe mode delete every ATi file in the system
directory (they all start ati*, IIRC).  Delete any inf file including the
ones Windows caches away, delete the entire ATI tree from the registry.
Reboot and reinstall the drivers.

In my situation the new drivers interacted badly with some remnant of a
previous driver version.

HTH,
Dale.

That happens if you have Smoothvision on.. You have to turn it off, and
re-boot... If you don't re-boot it'll still smear...

Hope that helps..

Yea, I get that problem in a couple of flight-sims too if I turn on
Smoothvision. Looks like your screen is melting. Cool effect ATI, but I
somehow don't think that is what was intended.

That was it, thank you. The re-boot was the part I didn't think to do.

Does that mean that GPL and Smoothvision is not a working combination
?

I have the R8500 on order, but if it doesn't work properly with GPL
it's cancelled.

So for some ridiculous reason smoothvision not being compatible with GPL is
a deal breaker for you?

Don't know yet, but I'm spoiled with the V5's FSAA.

Using the Omega 1306 drivers (which are modified versions of the
Smoothvision enabled ATI drivers) I got the menu corruption problem in GPL.
In my case the menus slowly slide sideways to the left leaving a series of
vertical lines. When actually in game raceing around a track everything was
fine and looked better than I've ever seen GPL look before with the stock
textures. The slideing effect goes away if Smoothvision is left off and GPL
still looks excellent. In my case I don't have to reboot between switching
Smoothvision on and off.

Hardly ridiculous if
a: GPL is your favourite sim, and / or
b: You like having good FSAA

Smoothvision doesn't work correctly in a few games, ATI will fix it
eventually. If I remember correctly the first V5 drivers also had some
problems in games when using FSAA. I'm certainly not returning my R8500
because of it. I rarely use FSAA anyway.

Gforce cards had a similar problem when they first came out. Drivers fixed
it so ATI will fix this problem too.
