GPL and ATI 8500 problem

I cannot get GPL to run with an ATI 8500 card. GPL worked fine with a
Geforce 3. Now that I've put an ATI 8500 in the same machine GPL just
keeps quitting out straight after the first title screen.

I've tried the software, OpenGL and Direct3D rasterisers, reinstalled
GPL to a new directory and installed all patches with no luck.

Help!

Put back your Nvidia card in...

Get the 6193 drivers, www.rage3d.com  GPL runs fine in either D3D or OGL on
my 9700.

I have an 8500 and GPL works fine for me. What drivers do you have
installed? I have the latest ones from the ATI site and they work great.

I've tried the latest drivers, v6193 but the same problem happens.
I've played GPL for years and never had a problem like this before.
This is very strange but I haven't got a clue what to do next. I'm
going to see if I can get hold of a Geforce card to try again.

Did you fully remove the nVidia drivers? I've heard of lots of people having
problems when they go from an nVidia to an ATi card, and most of the times
it was due to the remnants of nVidia drivers still on the PC.

I have an 8500 Athlon XP 1700+ running Windows XP Pro, and I've never had
any problems with GPL. I've tried GPL with practically every driver released
for the 8500, and never a problem. The only bugs I've ever encounter with
ATi's drivers and sims (at least the sims that I've played)have been with F1
2001 not working with AA turned on, and Catalyst 2.1 had a bug with F1
2002's telemetry (which has been fixed since Catalyst 2.2).

I would seriously try cleaning all signs of nVidia drivers, worst case
format and re-install Windows (I know, not fun).

How bizarre! Found the problem was due to the XP indexing being
switched off - saw this in some older posts on this newsgroup.
Switched it on for the GPL directory and GPL starts fine now!

Strange thing is I've been running GPL without the indexing on XP for
ages but as soon as I changed my video card it stopped working.

Thanks to all for the help, this newsgroup is great!

Have you turned on disk indexing? That's really the only thing that I've
seen that effects GPL in XP.
