I've seen threads that said ATI's notebook graphics chip is good, but I'm
not sure are there different classes of "Mobility" chips?

Yes.  Mobility chips have integrated memory so you have choices as to amount
of VRAM.  Also, there's Mobility M (which I think is the old Rage 128...
four-year-old tech) and Radeon Mobility chips (which are quite nice) and
probably some others...
