Problems with Thriller 3D and N2!!

by Brad Rosenbau » Fri, 13 Feb 1998 04:00:00

Hi,

I just bought the 8MB Thriller 3D.  I am having problems getting N2
to run in DOS.  It runs ok in windows but when I reboot to DOS it
cannot recognize the rendition chip or has an error initializing the
graphics system.  I downloaded and used a utility called v2dosfix
that is supposed to fix the problem.
At first it seemed to work, but I got mouse trails all over the screen
when I ran nasrend.exe and the game was EXTREMELY SLOW!!
I then downloaded the scitech display doctor and reran uvconfig.exe to
generate a new uvconfig.drv.  This caused even bigger problems
and now it will not run at all.  It gets an error trying to initialize
the VBE 0x4f01 function.
Has anybody else had this problem.  Any other rendition V2x00 users
out there that have had success getting N2 to run in DOS.  This is
very frustrating.

Thanks,
Brad

Problems with Thriller 3D and N2!!

Brad,

I use REDDMA.BAT -4  to fire Nascar2.  It's much faster than N2REND assuming
that your system supports DMA.  If not, the program will let you know. <g>
I run N2 this way within Win'95 with great frame rates, so I must ask why
you want to run it in pure DOS.  I am running a P200, 64 meg ram, Thriller 8
meg, and get 28-30 fps (or higher) with all graphics on and drawing all 39
cars.  I did not install the v2dosfix parch that you mentioned.  I did use
that patch for Indy Car Racing 2, but Nascar 2 (when run from Win '95)
doesn't seem to require it. As far as I know running univbe will not work
with the Thriller as univbe doesn't understand the "New" technology, and you
don't need univbe when running the Rendition version of N2 anyway.

E-mail me for more assistance if needed.

I get mouse problems in dos with n2 also. I play in win95 & it runs at the
same framerate as dos does . It plays fine with good framerates .

Problems with Thriller 3D and N2!!

Paul,

Thanks for the suggestion.  I have never really had any framerate
problems
with N2 (even before I bought a Thriller 3D).  I have previously run it
under both DOS and Win95.  The reason I prefer DOS is just simply to get
windows out the way.  It may be that the difference is negligible.
Another
reason is because it really bugs me when you spend $250 for a new piece
of
hardware and it breaks something that worked before.  I had a 1Mb
trident
video card before and everything worked ok.  Granted the graphics were
not
as fast or as good, but at least it worked.
Anyway, complaining aside, I finally got it to work.  If anybody is
interested,
here is what I had to do:

#1.  Uninstall Scitech Display Doctor, the univbe drivers do not seem to
work
     with the new hardware.

#2.  Download and use the V2dosfix utility.

#3.  Download the rendclk utility from Bjorn's 3D site.

#4.  Reboot to DOS and use rendclk to increase the clock rate of the
     memory and system clocks.

I also found that if you setup a shortcut that reboots to dos and runs
the game,
it will work without the rendclk utiliy. You would probably want to use
it anyway
though as it should increase performance.  I don't understand what the
difference
is between rebooting to DOS from the start menu and from setting up a
shortcut,
other than that first method doesn't seem to reboot the computer
entirely while the second does.
On another interesting note, the N2 readme.txt file says that the
renddma will not
work on AMD processor.  I have an AMD K6 233Mhz and it seems to work ok
for me.

Thanks,
