OT: 8mb Thriller 3D AGP problems... please help!!!

by Ed Solhei » Sun, 28 Nov 1999 04:00:00

I got this weird problem with my Thriller 3D 8mb AGP card which has been
bugging me for some time now.
It seems to me like the card  isn't fond of IE 5.0 at all... infact the
Thriller card hates IE 5.0 so much that after a veryshort time of browsing
the net, the computer will lock completely. No warnings or error
messages.... it just hangs... the cursor and mouse will freeze and the
keyboard wont work.

This is a problem I've had for a long time and it's really bugging the hell
out of me...   I've managed to narrrow it down to the Thriller card and IE5,
cause a:) the problem goes away if I use IE4 or swap to another vidoe-card
(which I had to do at work 'cause I was so fed-up about it all...)

Nw, some days ago... I decided to start from scratch again, just to see it
there was a possible conflict that had occur after installing certain
software or something like that... so I re-formatted the hard disk and
installed Win98 SE.

Unfortunatly... the problem still occurs..  :(((

Does anyone know if there's a solution to this or something?

I'm currently using what i beilive is the latest drivers for the card:
v.0.85.3596
File version: 4.10.01.3596.

I *currently*  do not have any network-card (other than the ISDN-card)
installed on the computer, nor do (afaik) use and  "user-profiles" in
windows.

Please help asap..

Thanks.

Hi Ed,
I had exactly the same problem with my Thriller 3D 4mb PCI.  After trying
many versions of Hercules and Rendition drivers, I read somewhere that it's
caused by the mouse pointer.  Go to you Control Panel->Mouse properties and
under the Pointer tab, set the Scheme to "Windows Standard".  That did it
for me.  Previously, with the Scheme set to "none", my PC would lock up when
scrolling in IE 5.

Good Luck,
Brian

the Thriller drivers also hate anything other than 16 bit color.  Try
setting your desktop to 16 bit colors, and shut off anything that animates.

Brian is exactly right Ed.  I had the same problem also.  If you're using
any of the "Pluspack" mouse cursors, you'll get lockups.  I was using
pluspack, but I just changed the mouse cursors to standard plain ones and
never had the problem again.  It was actually in the readme with the lastest
drivers, but it was VERY hard to find.  I fought that problem for days until
I found the solution.

Ed,

I had a problem with GPL and my Thriller card once, when I changed to W98.
You cannot use multiple users in W98, or it screws up GPL by stopping the
window re-sizing. Not sure if this has anything to do with your problem.
Mine was fine once I got rid of the multiple users.

Kind of off topic, but can you run NASCAR 99? Somewhere between
getting rid of my Thriller, upgrading to a V3-3000, DirectX 7, and
upgrading from 98 to SE I lost the ability to run NR99. It runs in
software mode so I know it's a video card (latest drivers) issue.

Latest  edition of  Thriller drivers are dated June 2  19999
and are Version: 3.0 beta5, build 5176 - June 2, 1999

Download from   http://www.rendition.com/usersupport.html

After update your driver file details should read version 4.11.01.5176

I have had similar problem to yours and found that this update all but
eliminated the  freezing problem.

Also download the latest  Internet Explorer  5.01 which I found
more stable and agreeable with the  Thriller.

Sorry... the whole thing was my own fault... I forgot to rename a soundfile
in GPL after editing it earlier today..

BOTH GPL and IE5 work great with these new drivers...

Bottom line: the Thriller drivers suck.  Always have and likely always will.
I had amazing problems in a whole variety of programs as soon as I installed
my 8MB Thriller AGP (replacing a Matrox AGP card).  The monitor shut-off
(power saving) wouldn't even work!!!!

Dumped it for a V3-3000...now I have better graphics, better framerate in
everything except GPL where the rate is probably equal to the Thriller, got
rid of my V2 (heat source) and have absolutely no problems with any game or
app. or Windows 98SE itself.

Uh.....scuse my ignorance...... maybe you could tell ME how to get rid of
"Multiple users" in W98???

Like an idiot I set up a user and now I cant seem to get it undone.  Every time
I boot up it shows the last user id and asks for a password.  I didn't set a
password so that's no big deal but I would sure like to deactivate this
function.

had any graphics problems with it and Voodoo cards.
