GPL fps: Thriller 3D, PCI 4mb vs. AGP 8mb

by mrace » Thu, 05 Nov 1998 04:00:00

Many have proclaimed the AGP 8mb Thriller the king of GPL,
but on my system I see similar results with a lowly 4mb PCI
Thriller. Has anyone actually tried them back to back in the
same system. On paper, I would also think that the AGP 8mb
would be faster, but I'm not so sure that is actually the
case. I've seen no test of them in the same system. Has
anyone tested this? It could be that the 8mb versions are
faster at 800x600, but not at 640x480.

I may end up getting an AGP 8mb Thriller just to free up a
PCI slot, if I can confirm that the white box model
TH2308A-WB is basically the same as the retail version. I'm
still waiting on a reply from Hercules about that. If I do,
I will test to see the difference.

GPL race settings:  Rendition, 640x480, AA off, mirrors cars
only, Detail bias at about the "o" in Rendition

aprox. 36-37 fps at all times with 19 AI cars, even from the
back of the field, smooth as silk.

My System:
Win98
Abit BH6
Celeron 300a (Boxed, SL32A, Malaysia, 450mhz, standard 2.0
voltage)
128mb T.I. PC-100 SDRAM -8
Hercules Thriller 3D PCI 4mb
Diamond Monster 3D II 12mb
Promise FastTrak
2x 6.5gb Seagate 7200rpm, 13gb striped set(raid 0)
Soundblaster AWE64
Linksys LN PCI 2 ethernet
Phoenix 16-bit ISA, 56K (V.90 and X2)
TM NASCAR Pro

BTW, this is pretty much my dream system, only I would
add/replace the modem with one of the new USB externals from
USR, a MS USB Digital Sound System, USB Keyboard, USB Mouse
and a high-res USB Digital camera.

GPL fps: Thriller 3D, PCI 4mb vs. AGP 8mb

Your system is almost the same as mine, i run a bx6 mb, and I saw a nice
increase when I replaced a 4meg pci thriller with an 8meg pci, although
I didn't run tests I recall roughly 2-4 fps increase. also I run my
celeron 300a at 374 with the same detail levels and get full fps like
you do. I have found that monaco is the test, it really sucks the power,
even at 450 I will get a 3-5 drop in fps in a pack of cars.
