Rascar at Homestead

Rascar at Homestead

Well, I'm glad I decided to sit out Tally and run Homestead this week, Tally
is often....well......just like you guys have described today's race. It's
Monza-like. Homestead, on the other hand, was plagued by the normal early
race caution jitters, then settled into a nice run to the end. For my part,
I was able to qualify towards the front and ran the first half in the top 5,
thru most of the cautions, without incident......'cept for having to dodge
Dave when he looped it :^)   Right before halfway we had the last caution of
the race, and I lined up 6th for the restart, rolled in to turn 1 and
suddenly everyone sorta stopped and let me thru, went into t3 in 2nd place
and had caught the leader going back into t1, and that's the end of the good
part, exiting 2 I hooked the apron and it tried to come around on me, I was
able to save it but got back in line dead last, spent the rest of the race
getting back up to 5th, before my badly abused tires forced me to relinquish
5th to Jan.....all in all an enjoyable racing experience, where we going
next week?

Hey, that's the first yellow I caused in 12 RASCAR races. :-) Yep, I simply
looped it and have no excuses.

I retired but watched the race, and saw you and Jan going at it along with
Ian and Colin for first and second. Excellent racing.

I have a question. Can anyone explain to me why I was given a 15 second stop
and go penalty on lap 17 at Homestead? I pulled into pit lane from the back
stretch under yellow (pits were open), and simply drove to the pits. After I
did my pit stop I was told I received the penalty (I think he said something
about passing under yellow) but I can't imagine what I could of done wrong.
I was on pit road, so how could I of passed anyone still on the track
following the pace car? That penalty put me a lap down and ruined the race
for me. I can send someone a clipped replay if they are willing to check it
out and let me know if it was actually a penalty or a game error.

You probably passed someone on the track, while you were approaching the
pits themselves.

Send me a clip if you want.

By this I mean, they were still on the track, you weren't (going to the
pits), and passed them.

I looked, and I didn't pass anyone before I entered pit lane. Replay is on

I dunno - I got one the first race(Tally).  My spotter kept alternating between
saying "pass the 19 car"(you - 5 cars ahead) and "stay behind the ##
car"(several cars behind me.  I got a black flag for passing under yellow.
Grrr...

We might not - I'm not happy about the way the Tally race went... :(
Maybe we need more than one week to practice for these...

Actually, you passed everyone<G>  Even when going to the pits, you can't
pass those that stay on the track, and vice versa.  You needed to stay
"behind"(via F2 screen since he couldn't be seen) Tony in this case.

Please dont say that a pleae lets not all go and do just that....
If we start treathing this as "real" races - things will get ***...  Can't
we please keep this on a "fun-level"?

But that I mean that other than knowing/learning the track and having a
car-setup you feel comfortable with - there should be no point in
practicing...

Once we reach the "oh, I must practice for my RASCAR race level...  - the
fun's all over for  many of us I think..

I considered that was the case, but it's such a stupid way to pit I didn't
think it could be true. :-)

It takes a little getting used to, especially on the tracks with an access
road.   But it makes sense, and is an actual rule.  Otherwise, those that
pit would be pitting after/behind you, even though they were ahead of you on
the track.

Some leagues have a minimum speed.  If you cannot achieve the minimum speed
in practice, you should not qual and race.  The minimum can be posted prior
to the event.  The F2 screen will show during practice who has learned the
track and can run the minimum speed.  Minimum can be whatever you decide.
Would 37.xxx seconds have been a good minimum for Homestead at 70 degrees?

On the other hand, to keep the "fun level" up, maybe everyone should be
allowed to race everywhere regardless of proficiency.

If I could only type and drive, David, I would have warned you!

I could see you go past me as you went down the pit lane and got way ahead of me
and the car in front. My F2 screen still showed you ahead at the s/f line.

Perhaps I will map a suitable comment to a wheel button. I certainly didn't need
to tell lapped traffic I would be passing low in that race :-)

I got damaged early on and got the dreaded "we've got problems with that motor"
message. Down on power after that and decided to call it a day after getting
swamped at the restarts.

Still, progress is being made - I could see the pace car at the start of this
race having qualified further up than previous RASCAR races!

Cheers

Rascar at Homestead

by Don Burnett » Mon, 29 Apr 2002 22:01:44

There is a point in practicing, and that is if nothing else to know how your
car is going to handle at each track in different grooves.
Some guys can do this in 30 minutes, others it takes hours.
This is of course just my humble opinion, but with the physics in N2002 and
with especially the size of the turnout, anything we can do to help cut down
on the number of cautions would help make it a more enjoyable "fun" event
for everyone..

But I do agree with you on not stopping this, of course it's Eldred's server
and he can do what he wants - I think it is wonderful Eldred is taking the
time and effort to put these on - many thanks!!
But no doubt, if the field size stays the same as Saturday or even grows
larger, many cautions will just be something we will have to deal with.
Let's just make the best of it and have as much fun as we can. I am
convinced from what I have seen that with field sizes at 25 and above it is
just very difficult to have a good race without multiple cautions. That many
cars with this physics model and a sensitive collision detection along with
warping , it's just going to happen..
