Simple... some guy chats something and inadvertantly leaves a gap, which he
makes up in a burst of accelleration. This starts an accordeon effect in the
pacing line and at some point someone ends up having to slow from 95mph to
30mph very sharply, the guy behind just about manages to avoid an accident,
but gets rear-ended by the next guy down and this starts an accident.

Keeping the pacing speed reasonably constant is much harder than keeping
draft going.

Just to clarify,

By practice/ lerarning the track - i do ofcourse mean that one must be able
to keep the car on track and be able to drive **within oneselfs limits**.
There's no point practicing for hours on end, if you end up seeing red by
turn 2 - and then***it all up by trying to do the impossible!

I normally don't participate in the chitchat all that much, but now I was
one of the big offenders. Why? Because I was doing three laps under yellow
for every two laps under green.

I took the blame at one point for the change in pace, I was on the head of
the field for a large part of the race and at one point apologized for the
changing pace. But later on, I noticed it wasn't my fault. When I got back
from my pitstop in 11th place, some where leaving huge gaps and closing them
every now and then to leave to open up the next corner.

So I wasn't responsible in my view for the changing pace, it could have been
a bit better but not much. Next time I'll withold of any chitchat, although
I had quite some good laughs.

I forgot I wasn't in an F1 race. :-)

It has always been like that, since the days of the NROS (it was 8 back then
and 3 in the mirror).  There is a limit of cars you actually see on screen,
it's a complicated thing really.  That setting you have inside NR2002 serves
mostly for AI offline racing.  The server only gives you an X number of cars
around you, only the ones closer to you.  IIRC it can now since N4 be
changed in the core.ini (similar to GPL).

Also, be careful when you get turned around on the track, you may think the
track is clear when in reality you have cars coming, that's a great time to
use your F2 split screen.
You may not realize this, but when your turned around your only viewing the
cars drawn behind, just like you would in your mirror if your facing the
proper direction on the track.  Even though you are looking out your
windshield, if you are facing the wrong direction you can only see the
number of cars set to be drawn in your mirror.  Often times folks pull out
when facing the wrong way thinking traffic is about to be clear, only to be
nailed by another oncoming car they didn't see out the window.
