N4 in Win2K - Problems

by Peter Hoope » Tue, 31 Jul 2001 07:57:48

Hi all,

Having been unable to solve my problems getting N4 running succesfully
consistently on my new system under WinME I decided to have a bash at
doing it under Win2K. My MSFF wheel seemes to have been installed fine
using the standard drivers (not the Sidewinder software) and N4
installed without a hitch. However, when I go into the sim the text on
all pages is horribly garbled, with bits missing and even whole
sections of some pages completely missing (the force feedback options
are impossible to make out for instance). I managed to make enough of
it out however and tried to test at Atlanta but the graphics were all
over the place with bits of the walls being drawn as I drove past it
and other stuff flashing all over. Also the framerate was well down on
what I normally get under WniME.

Anybody have any advice on what I could do to solve this. I have the
what I believe to be the latest drivers for my V5 5500. Here's the
ssytem:-

AMD Athlon 1.2ghz on an Apollo KT 133 based motherboard
512MB RAM
V5 5500 64MB AGP
SBLive Player 1024
20GB and 15GB HD

Many thanks

PH

Use the Voodoo5 WHQL drivers available via WindowsUpdate.

N4 in Win2K - Problems

Just to let you know that I updated my V5 drivers via WindowsUpdate
and bingo!! N4 works properly... no scrambled text or dodgy graphics
:O)

Framerates were down on what I expected (around the 30 mark in a
single race with 43 cars) and things seemed a little jerky but I was
running at 800x600 whereas my desktop was set at 1024x768 so I changed
the desktop to 800x600 and tried again and now the framerates were up
into the 60's and 70's at times with an average of around mid 40's
with all cars on the track. Also I seemed to find that the MSFF was
now giving much more feedback and greater control...

Plus no lockups so far... I'll be giving it a big test over the next
few days and then trying my other sims in Win2K with a view to a
complete switch over to it if that is succesful.

Many thanks for the advice Eric...
