Weird GPL problem/win2k

by Ian » Sat, 31 Mar 2001 07:13:20

Hi, I need help with a very strange GPL problem.

I have two Windows 2000 machines, the Professional machine has no problems,
it's Windows 2000 server that seems to be the problem.

Specs are P2-350, Voodoo 3 PCI, PCI soundcard, ISDN card, Adaptec SCSI,
Intel chipset, DirectX7, latest voodoo drivers, all pretty much standard
stuff.  When I try to host a race on this machine, GPL appears to be running
at double the speed that it should be!  The clock counts down very quickly
and if I try and do a lap it's hilarious!

What isn't so funny is that I have tried different rasterizers, software,
d3d & glide......i've ran it in a window........i've tried the "apcompat"
program.........i've played with all the core.ini settings and now, before
it goes out the window, I turn to you.

Anyone have any ideas?

Oh, and while i'm here, Sprint Car Racing + W2K + D3D.....any way to get
that working yet?

Thanks in advance guys,
Ian

That's really weird. I have enough difficulty driving at normal speed let
alone double!

I've been running GPL on my Win2k server for a year now and never had any
problems like that. I've networked it with no problems between 2 Win2K
Server machines and Win2k Sever to both Windows 98, 98SE and ME with both
active directory on off.

Have you tried a new installation of Win2 Server? It might be a good idea to
ghost your installation then install a fresh copy of Win2K and try it out.
If it doesn't solve the problem then just ghost your working version back
again.

I'm pretty stumped as to what might cause your problem.

So was I, until I started messing around with the video drivers.  I tried
using the voodoo driver from the win2k CD and GPL works fine with that.
Unfortunately, my monitor is quite old and if i run at 800x600, the refresh
rate really needs to be set at 56Hz but the driver only goes down to
60Hz.....the picture is fine, just "bulging" at the sides :)

So, if you want to serve/play GPL on win2k with a voodoo card, avoid the
latest drivers IMO.  And if you know how I can get below 60Hz with the
default win2k voodoo driver, do tell!

Thanks
Ian

Have you installed a Nascar 4 demo on your machine? If so, remove the
papy*.sys files from your system directory. The demo installs
non-gpl-compatible files in there. The symptons is that gpl sometimes runs
2x speed.

"
Try using powerstrip. I use it to set custom refresh rates, I don't know if
it will go as low as you need however. It may be better just picking up a
cheap replacement monitor.
