GPL/Voodoo3/Win2k problems

by Wallace Whit » Mon, 19 Jun 2000 04:00:00

I have a PIII system with a Voodoo3 3000 AGP, and GPL ran great under
Win98... but then I went and did a clean install of Win2k Pro. Since
then, I haven't been able to get GPL to run.

It will run if set for software rendering, but if set to use 3dfx, it
flashes the splash screen for GPL and for 3dfx and then shows a black
screen and hourglass pointer... and locks up completely.

Unreal (using Glide, like GPL) runs fine.

I've tried the OpenGL route, but I get no mouse input at all, and I
can't figure out how to get to driving without having the mouse to
navigate.

I have the latest Voodoo3 official drivers; I might try the "leaked
Beta" drivers just in case.

Any other suggestions on what might be up? I'm getting close to
dual-booting Win98 just for this one game, though I'd hate to do that.

Thanks,
Wallace

What do you know: now it works. I can't believe it! Thanks, George
Smiley, for the patch! And thanks, Michael, for the information.

Anyone know why my Logitech FF wheel (using the standard W2K Pro
drivers) has trouble with this game? I can see the steering and pedal
axes during GPL calibration, but then I can't assign the steering axis
to any control.

Many thanks,
Wallace

Use the banshee/v3 patch for GPL. You can find it at
http://www.theuspits.com or http://www.the-fastlane.com/index.shtml Follow
the instructions in the readme and you'll be set.

Thanks for the information! I installed them (glad to see that Logitech
finally has Win2k drivers) and GPL saw steering, gas, and brake all
separately--the first time I ran it. It was a wonderful, albeit brief,
moment. After restarting the game, the foot pedals show no activity in
the calibration dialog, in GPL or Windows' control panel.

In the wheel's control panel, I have unchecked the combined pedals
option, since I prefer the gas and brake separate (why not?). Then the
control panel's own display shows no activity on the pedals. Looks like
it may work with them combined.

Perhaps this is just a bug of the beta software, but since I've had such
good luck with great advice here, I'd appreciate any help. Thanks!

Yes it is a bug with the software and the only reason I went back to Win98.
Mine wasn't as severe as yours where the drivers blew up just shutting GPL
down but on every reboot of the computer I'd have to remove and reinstall
the drivers.
