OT: Win2k \ Win98SE Networking \ ICS Problem

by Peter Hoope » Sat, 18 Aug 2001 08:04:08

Hi all,

Hi guys,

I've tried getting a response from various networking ng's regarding
this problem but without any luck so hope you don't mind my posting it
here seeing as I have always got such good advice before.

I have been trying to set up my 2 PC's at home so that I can access
the drives of each PC from each other and also share the ADSL
connection of my main PC with the second one. I have this working fine
with Win ME on the Host and Win 98SE on the client but the host dual
boots to Win2K and from there although I can access the drives of the
client I can't do it the other way around and access the drives of the
host from the client. I get the following error message:-

\\???? is not accessible. No permission to access resource (where ????
is the name I have given to the host computer).

From the host I right click on one of the drives and it says it is
being shared but if I click on Permissions it says:-

This has been shared for administrative purposes. The permissions
cannot be set.

How do I make it so that I can read the host pc's drives from the
client??

Also, I am unable to use the ADSL connection from the client whilst in
Win2k... With the Win2K machine connected to the net the client just
can't seem to find that connection and can't load any web pages or
access any e-mail. I have the Win2k machine setup to use ICS and have
the sharing icon showing in the taskbar on the host but the client
won't connect.

Hope someone can offer some help.

TIA

PH

Not sure if I'm heading in the right direction here but ...

To share the files, try this.
Open Administrative tools, Local security policy.
Right click on the rights (access this computer from the network)
Click add user then select "everyone". See if that works.

I'm afraid I can't help much with ICS, but you may find these pages useful.

You may want to use a second protocol on your inside LAN as well.  I'd
recommend NetBEUI.   It's fast and easy.

I was going to recommend that as well, but the site I pointed the original
poster to recommends not using it.

"Among the installed components listed in the General tab, the following
should be checked here
Client for Microsoft Networks
Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)
If NetBEUI is checked for this connection, un-check it now. It's not needed,
and may prevent ICS from working. "

I suppose it's a case of try it and see if it works.

Also you need to log on in Win98 machine as administrator.

OT: Win2k \ Win98SE Networking \ ICS Problem

Peter, I had the exact same problem when I tried to set up ICS. It's
actually a couple of issues, and I think I remember how I worked through
each of them. I'm using a dual boot WinME/Win2k Server as host and WinSE as
client. I don't think that makes much difference.

There are probably a dozen ways to work through each of these issues, but
here goes what worked for me.

To deal with this, I added my user name to the list of permissions for the
share. I also made sure that on my client (winSE) machine I am logged in as
the same user. But you're having a problem adding permissions to a share,
yes? See below.

You want to click the new share button. Right click the drive, select
sharing, then down toward the bottom of the dialog box there's a button just
above the Apply button that allows you to add a new share. Once you add the
new share name, you can add permssions to it. You can't add permissions to
the default share "C$".

This one took me a while to figure out. Best I can offer is to tell how mine
is set up. First, I have NetBEUI and TCP/IP added. If you go to Advanced>
Advanced Settings from the Network and Dial-up Connections window, you can
define bindings. On the NIC for my internet connection, I have NetBEUI bound
to file and print sharing and Client for MS networks. On the NIC for my
local connection, I have both NetBEUI and TCP/IP bound to file and print
sharing and Client for MS networks.

Good luck!

I log on to the Win98SE machine under the same name as I do on the
Win2k machine so I am assuming that this does mean I am logged on as
administrator.. how do I check though?

Thanks

Thanks Tim,
I'm just on my way to work now but will try what you suggest as soon
as I get home and let you know how it goes.

Thanks

Hmm, I log on to my client machine (Win ME) with the same user name but a
different  password. I can still connect to the Win 2000 machine. However, I
think I have to be logged onto the win 2000 machine as administrator, but
don't hold me to that.

It shouldn't interfere with ICS which should only use TCP/IP.  I mentioned
NETBEUI in regards to File & Printer sharing.

You can adjust what protocols are actually bound for File & Printer sharing
under the advanced bindings section of the network properties.
If you're PC is also directly connected to the Internet, I would disable
TCP/IP as being bound to file and printer sharing and use NetBEUI instead on
your home LAN.    Doing so makes your machine a little more secure as well.
