Finally! GPL, XP & SBLive live together in harmony

Wow, amazing! After months of trying to get GPL to live with XP and the
cracking/static noise of the SBLive I think my quest is finally over. I
tried everything, from turning the accelleration down to changing the BIOS
to changing my drivers. Nothing worked consistently. Finally, I read a
message that had a link in it. I tried it out and sure enough it worked! I
installed the driver twice and it worked out consistently.

Good luck!

Can you run Dxdiag and tell me what the version number of these
drivers is? I'm hoping its 5.12.01.244
I had a similar sound problem with Unreal Tournament that this version
fixed, and I'm hoping it'll work with GPL when I re-install it.

Thanks

Hate to tell you this, but many of us had this problem and solved with the
updated drivers a long time ago.  (And many of us went through the same
ridiculous goose-chase to figure out what could be wrong.)

Unbelievably, I had a "fixed" Live! and then "upgraded"/installed an Audigy
and had the whole thing happen over again.  Of course it took Creative about
6 months to release a driver update specific to the Audigy and XP to fix the
same problem they already fixed with the Live!

Tim,
I'm not at home, but I checked out the date of the driver last night
and it's actually an older driver from 5/1/01 or thereabouts. It was
definitely from 2001 though.

A bit of bad news, I tried GPL with those particular drivers and it
was jerking or stuttering continuously. In fact it was so bad I got
fed-up and installed the sblive drivers they had on the
creative-labs.com site, which were from 2002. The good news is that
GPL's sounds still works (with the accompanying little clicks and
pops), but no static. I can live with clicks and pops. I can't live
with the terrible static noise like I heard in GPL and Battlefield
1942 demo.

Am I the only one with this problem? I can solve the static problem but the
sound still progresses in steps instead of smoothly as I accelerate (GPL,
XP, SBlive). I've tried everything I can think of including reducing
hardware acceleration and changing drivers. I haven't heard of others with
this phenomenon and it makes GPL unplayable in XP for me. I'm still using 98
for GPL until I can cure this. If anyone knows the solution I would be
grateful.

Spark,
My original problem was that the sound was similiar to  yours where it would
sound like musical notes going up.
the scale. I resolved that by just updating the drivers.

I've been having the same static/crackling music note problem on my
computer with XP/LIVE/GPL as well. I just downloaded the
http://download.creative.com/software/winxp/SBLiveXPDrvUpdate.exe and
am looking forward to trying it when I get home. I'll let you all know
how it works out for me.

Hi,

I always see lots of comments about problems with the sound using
SBLive cards. I have the same type of sound issue with a Philips
Acoustic Edge. Sometimes the sounds good, some times it's terrible. I
have the latest drivers. So it's not just a problem with Creative
sound cards.

Richard.

Wooo Hooo! That driver update (downgrade) fixed GPL plus BF42 even
sounds better than it did. I'm now in Gamer heaven.
I had a Philips card that didn't have good XP support as well. :(
