Anybody found the definitive fix for distorted sound in GPL under XP using
an SBLive?  I tried updating drivers, didn't help.  Tried running GPL in
Windows 98 compatibility mode, helped but killed the frame rate and made it
unplayable.  Tried turning down audio hardware acceleration, appeared to
help but the problem was back the next day, even though I verified that
audio acceleration was still turned down.  Anybody?  I'm going to go deaf if
I have to keep driving this way.  :o(

Tried everything under the sun.  No go.  Currently I'm using the AC'97
onboard sound.  Seems fine.  All of my games (except framerate limited ones
like GPL, GP4 etc) are about 2-3fps slower due to the extra CPU load of
AC'97 but I can live with that.

Just a suggestion, but have you updated your 4in1 driver lately? I've never
noticed it make a difference either way, since the basic acceleration thingy
works for me, but try either getting a new one if yours is old, or trying an
older one if yours is up to date.

No, but since I am using an Intel chipset that probably wouldn't help much.
;o)  Thanks for the suggestion though.

Hmm.  While I would really like to avoid buying a new sound card, I guess I
may as well ask - does anyone know if there are any problems using an Audigy
with GPL in XP?

A friend of mine has an Audigy and has no problems what-so-ever in GPL/XP.
Not saying that nobody has problems, but at least I've seen one in the flesh
that works with GPL/XP - whereas all the Lives I've seen in the flesh have
had problems regardless of drivers, hardware, patches, blessings from the
Gods etc.

Some have, although many that had the problem with a Live card found it
cured it.
Apparently the Audigy2 doesn't have this problem, but the more or less
guaranteed fix is to buy a Turtle Beach Santa Cruz Soundcard. I've only ever
seen one complaint of this problem with that card but I understand that
although it's a good card, it's not as technologically advanced as an
Audigy.

I found a sort of a workaround, at least for training mode.  If I go into
training mode, hit the red button to exit, then cancel the exit and finally
get in the car and drive, it works fine, at least until the next time I go
back to the menus.  Every time I go back to the menus I have to pretend to
exit and then cancel the exit in order to get the sound to work right.  I
suppose you could probably due something equivalent in Practice and Race
modes also.

It's not all bad by the way.  In Windows 98 I had to use 120 msec of latency
with my Momo Racing Wheel and with the FFGP wheel I had before that.  With
XP 35 msec is perfectly adequate, in both GPL and NR2002.  So now I
understand why everybody kind of raised their eyebrows at the extreme
latency settings I used before.  Win98 must have had one horribly f*ed up
USB layer or something.

Well, my FF in GPL improved dramatically once I tool your advice to use a
very high latency setting.  I just tried using a lower setting in WinXP (got
a dual boot with 98) but the higher setting still worked better just like
98.  Differs from wheel to wheel I guess.

WIN XP PRO with SP1 and Audigy1 running at solid 36 fps here with no sound
problems at all. Rest of system is Athlon 1.2 c,Abit KT7A Raid mobo(Bios
version 7N I believe),512 pc133,GF2 GTS 64 Meg Detonator 40.something
drivers, not sure which 4in1's I have at the moment.

I did have an SBLive! in here before the Audigy and when I switched(last
year) I still had crackled sounds. The 4in1's fixed it for me.

Interesting.  Didn't I read that you use a Momo Racing also?  Oh well, I've
never really been sure just where in the system all that latency is
happening, but it could be accumulating in several different places (game,
OS, USB link, wheel firmware, physical motor latency) and thus the wide
variation from one machine to the next or even one OS to another on the same
machine.  Great that you found a setting that works though.

I've been looking at getting a Momo Racing - mainly because FF with the LWFF
is a major CPU hog for F1 200X in WinXP - hence the dual boot....

Sorry matey.  I was in exactly the same boat as you.  Tried
everything, and nothing worked.  Ended up diving into PC World and
picked up a Fortissimo III (half the price of the Audigy 2).  Not
based on any reviews or anything, but because it *wasn't* creative and
I haven't seen anyone complaining they couldn't get it to work
properly.  As it happens, I still get a GPL curiosity.  After a few
laps the sound volume appears to switch to a lower level.  Very
strange, but I can live with it - doesn't stop me from being able to
drive the car like the SBLive did.

I actually saw this post and thoughth that you were gonna say you'd
found a solution.  That would have been typical.  Right *after* I'd
spent the money...

Mark

Just thought I should mention that I have no problems with my SB live
in either 98SE or XP Pro in case anyone thought that everyone has
problems. (using ASUS CUSL2 mb & V7700 vdieo card with 512 ram & P3
700)
AllI did when I got XP was copy my GPL folder into the XP area and run
from that, using the latest SB Live drivers fom the Creative site and
it has just worked OK.

Try converting your sounds to 11k 8bit mono or stereo and set sounds heard
to 16.

Mine works fine with that.
