After trying all of the Soundblaster drivers that came out after 8/01 and
having the intolerably distorted sound at least intermittently I reinstalled
the driver that shipped with my computer and it works.  There is a bit of
crackling though.  It sounds good in Nascar 2002, Battlefield 1942 and GTR
2002.

I never tried the turn down the volume in windows solution but that worked
using media player the other day when streaming KNAC.COM which makes me
think I should have.  If the media player volume was too high it had a sound
problem that was similar to the problem I had with GPL.

I recently noticed that my sound card is in the PCI slot next to the AGP
slot which I know is not necessarily desirable but it's working now.

I don't think I can go back to the original drivers that came with it
because they were for Windows 98 only.  Anyway, setting audio acceleration
to basic gave me the same results you have - some crackling in GPL but
otherwise it sounds fine.  Unfortunately it does seem to hurt the frame rate
a bit in GPL, but I was able to get it back by turning down the graphics
detail slider.

About the volume thing - I tried that at one point and it appeared to work
initially, but then it later failed.  It does sound like clipping
distortion, which should just be a matter of volume, but that didn't fix the
problem permanently for me.

Went back and tried Sound Acceleration at Basic (one above none) and was
able to run a single player race. Before that I could never get single
player to run w/o crackling. Sounds almost perfect now.
Online I was able to get rid of crackling by exiting a race and reentering.
Worked every time online but not at all offline. So now I'm sitting pretty
and listening to  mp3s with no problems because of lowering Sound
Acceleration.
I would suggest getting the SBLive WinXP drivers. They did a lot of good on
my system.
I'll have to see if lowering Sound Acceleration to Basic hurts anything
else, but so far so good.  I guess last time I tried lowering Sound
Acceleration I was leery of losing some sound quality, but in reality I
don't find any problem.
Thanks for the advice and support.

Did this problem go away? I know that u said above that it reverted after
turning down Sound Acceleration. Did you get rid of that problem? Just
curious.

Thank you

Definitely.  Even BF 1942 didn't work right until I got the XP drivers.

The first time I just tried turning it down to Standard.  That wasn't
sufficient.  Turning it down to Basic works, but does cause a frame rate
penalty at some tracks.  Turning the detail slider down helped with that.

Yep, this game was responible for lots of people updating their SBLive XP
drivers...

Odd...I dunno then.   This has worked for me and 3 mates...I should mention
that I'm running F3 cars - don't know if that makes any difference.

It didn't work right on my son's XP machine either, and he was using the
on-board sound.  So while I am tempted to blame Creative (on principle :) I
think that in the case of BF 1942 the game developers actually screwed it
up.  I noticed it also has to be run from an account with admin privileges
(according to the readme).  I don't think DICE ever tested it on XP.  Damn
good game other than that though.  With lots of "simulated autos".  That
blow up real good.  ;o)

I don't know if this is a definitive fix, but this is the best and
only way I was able to get it to work. I'd go into a race and when
it's in practice mode, accelerate the time until all the cars are
practicing and go back to normal. Then I go into the***pit of each
car and just quickly swap between them. The Ferrari, Lotus, and BRM
are what sounds terrible. However, if you swap the***pits and go
back and forth the sounds sometime fix themselves. When the engines
sound good, go back and practice. This should be good for one race. If
the sounds are terrible by race time, do the same thing before the
race starts. If it doesn't work, close down and restart GPL. Make sure
you save your practice place and it'll work about 99% of the time if
you do the same thing.

I was getting pretty upset by the fact that the sound didn't work.
However, this "fix" got me racing again. I haven't tried it
multiplayer though so your mileage may vary.

As a permanent fix, though, I ended up buying EA Sports F1 2002 for
$19.99 and have been very, very happy with it.

Good luck.
