Are you using the sound patch for GPL then or did you unpack the dat file
and convert those?

That is interesting because I am using a very similar configuration, the
primary difference being video card.  Do you run in D3D or OpenGL?  Are you
running the GPL sound patch?  Also are you running the CPU speed patch?

The only difference between what you did and what I did is I re-ran the
installation in case there were registry entries that it needed, and then
copied my old folder on top of the new one.  I wonder if the installer
***s things somehow.

Never mind.  I played around a little and figured out that the sound patch
doesn't really do anything other than rename the sounds used in the .exe
file, the formats are still the problem.  So I first tried converting
everything to 16 bit 22 khz, since it seemed like the 8 bit 22 khz sounds
were the problem.  That worked for some, but some still distorted.  Then I
took your advice and converted them all to 8 bit 11 khz mono and now it more
or less works.  Occasionally one will still sound distorted when I first
start out, but if I hit esc and then come back in it is fine after that.
Thanks for the help, you just saved me the cost of a new sound card!

Have you tried turning down the volume through the windows volume control,
and then cranking the volume up higher through your actual speaker volume
control? Seems like I did this and it helped back when I had the SB Live,
but that was on win98 then.

Fwiw, I have used both the Audigy Gamer and now the Audigy 2 on XP without
those problems.

I found the solution on google groups that worked 100% for me:

Go to Start->Run->dxdiag
go to the Sound tab
slide the "Hardware Acceleration" slider to one click above minimum
exit dxdiag

run GPL.
Voila - sound was fixed.  You will probably have to set it back to max for
other games tho...but this 100% solved the problem for me.  Good old google!

google!

Doesn't work for me.  Nor does fiddling with windows volume or converting
sounds to 8bit 11kHz...very strange.

It's still nigh-on impossible to find one here in Australia and they
reportedly have a RRP of $249. (about US$140)

FWIW I've upped sounds heard and that solves the volume problem.

But...

DAMN!!!!

For the first time in ages I ran an offline race as opposed to just
pootling around practising and I get the dreaded GPL STUTTERS!

Crap.

Don't know if this is caused by the soundcard change, a driver change
(graphics or sound) or what.  I've monkeyed around with a load of
stuff since the last time I ran with other cars on track.

I've tried googling, but trawling through the search results I get is
extremely time consuming.  If anyone has info to hand it would be
mucho appreciated.

Regards,

Mark

<snip>

I had problems with a very similar system (CUSL2-C) and SoundBlaster Live!
Went with the Turtle Beach Santa Cruz and got a framerate increase enough so
that I'm actually able to play NR2002 with decent looking graphics at
1024x768.

Have you ever seen how much ***SoundBlaster writes into the registry? Even
after cleaning with Jouni Vuorio's RegCleaner there was a ton of entries
still*** around.

I still get a little crackling sound in GPL and the sound goes to a lower
volume sometimes when you spin or a car approaches from the rear, then kicks
back in a the most inappropriate time, like when braking at the end of a
long high-speed straight (Zandvoort). Now this is with WinXP Home SP1 latest
TB drivers & DirectX 8.1 (std WinXP) and after removing and cleaning the SB
Live. BTW I do have engine sound mods that worked just fine years ago using
Diamond Monster MX300, SB Live Value, SB PCI-128, & SB AWE32 on two other
computers.

If this does this with a Fresh install of WinXP it'll be "Throw another PC
card onto the s***heap".
IMO I think Microsoft's D3D Sound or Video sucks. Bring Back 3Dfx & A3D!

There use to be alot of ***'in in the SB Live newsgroups about problems,
now that most have abandoned Live for Audigy, all post are in the Audigy
groups. FWIW, a while back while talking in the PalTalk tech groups, a
fellow asked me what my model # of my Live card was, as he had heard that
some units had inferior chips on them, (due to the high volume of sales)
almost to the point of being recalled by Creative. I have never read about
this anywhere else on the net. Anyone ever heard of this?

Go with the Turtle Beach Santa Cruz IMO.

Mark the only "Stuttering" that I've had in GPL is in a online race just as
my connection "lagged". Once the connection settled out, framerate went back
to smooth. Turtle Beach Santa Cruz with (same) low sound volume problem

Enen if you have to pay that much...it's well worth it. Just look at all the

I have the same problem. No volume fiddling worked either. Best I could do
was get the latest XP drivers for SBLive. Now I can get the crackling to go
away some of the time by using Shift-R, or clicking back to the Pit view and
sometimes the sound will go away.
I can find the link for the drivers if NEone is interested.

Well I appear to have it solved now.  I tried all levels of audio
acceleration and found *one* that worked.  The levels are: None, Basic,
Standard, and Full.  I found that None does not distort, but it does make
the audio sound horrible, like playing a pre-sound card game.  Basic works,
no distortion, acceptable fidelity.  Standard and Full both distort.  With
Basic audio acceleration I was also able to revert to the original sound
samples.  Haven't tried any downloaded ones yet, but I clearly did not need
the 11 khz 8 bit samples anymore.  I also went and tested a few other games
and the difference in FPS was barely noticeable.  I recorded a quick demo in
Q3 to try and quantify it and got 76 fps with Basic acceleration and 78 fps
with Full acceleration.  That is less than a 3% penalty, which I think is
not even noticeable.  And since most more recent games are less CPU
dependent than Q3, I would expect the difference to be even less in them.

FWIW I believe the differences are: None does everything in the CPU, Basic
accelerates Windows sound calls only, Standard adds DirectSound
acceleration, and Full adds EAX acceleration.  As most SBLive owners know,
EAX acceleration doesn't really work anyway, it's more like EAX
deceleration.  And the value of DirectSound acceleration is also somewhat
questionable when you consider that the Live was released four years ago.
Is anyone still playing games with the same video accelerator that they had
four years ago?  So I don't feel like I am losing much of anything by
turning the sound acceleration down, and now GPL works.  <crossing fingers>

"> DAMN!!!!

Same problem here after reformatting, GPL/XP worked fine in previous install
with the same hardware, I'm not sure it's as stutter free as before but
disabling cd autoplay in gpedit.msc helped a bunch.
Type gpedit.msc in run dialog, the path is Comp Config/Win Settings/Admin
Templates/System.
