GPL + XP + SBLive = BAD! How's Audigy?

by Mar » Wed, 30 Oct 2002 20:55:27

Just got GPL going again on my rebuilt rig (love that OpenGL patch
from racesimcentral!) but I've got *that* problem with the SBLive.
Got the latest drivers and have tried all levels of accelleration to
no avail.

Any suggestions that would involve me not spending money would be
superb, but failing that will an Audigy give me any grief?

FWIW this is the first problem I've had with Creative and I don't mind
sticking by 'em.

Cheers,

GPL + XP + SBLive = BAD! How's Audigy?

I've heard some complain of the same problem with the Audigy, while others
have been fine where their old Live! card had problems, so I'd say don't
upgrade *just* to try to solve this problem. It may work, it may not.

To help reduce crackling, lower the volume in windows & raise the volume of
your speakers to compensate. This seems to do it, although ymmv.

To help with distorted sounds (eg after shift_R) open dxdiag.exe, go to the
sound tab & reduce the hardware acceleration to one above minimum.
This seems to reliably solve the gpl problem, but may potentially create
problems in other sound applications, so try different levels if this
happens. Someone mentioned recently that a mixture of 8bit & 16bit sounds
may be the problem, although I have no idea how you can tell one sort from
the other.

You could also try the latest Creative drivers, but most posts I've seen,
and my own experience suggests that this doesn't solve the problem on it's
own (ie you have to do the other stuff anyway), so although it'll do no
harm, it's probably not going to make a big difference to gpl.

that someone was me!  a while back i had a SBLive128 pci card.  i
added some engine sounds from somewhere, and some were awful.  closer
inspection found the bad ones were 8 bit, the nice ones 16 bit (or
could have been the other way around).

if you load them into the MS Sound Recorder app then try to save them,
in the save dialogue box, it'll tell you the bit rate, and also let
you change it when you save it.  so i could change from 8 to 16 bit
samples, and my troubles went away.  this was a few years ago tho!

btw, in win98 i have to reboot when trying diff. levels of sound
accel.  are you doing this?

I think it's pretty well established that the Creative cards under XP
will tend to give more grief than some others.  This is coming from
someone with a Live in his *** rig (under 98SE).  I did go through
the trouble of preventing IRQ sharing.

2 suggestions:
-Find a slot in your system that does not share an IRQ with any other
(or USB/Firewire ports), and disable ACPI if possible (and you don't
mind losing some power mgmt crap).  You'll have to jump through a few
hoops if you want to get ACPI disabled in a system that's already
setup.  Tread lightly, or just start from scratch again.
-Just ran into this on Racesim central's forums - get the older SB
Live drivers (3509, dated 2001).  This appears to be the fix for alot
of people.

Unfortunately market share doesn't seem to relate to freedom from
problems.

HTH,
Kendt

Well thank the good doctor ;-)

So where did I read it? Here? vroc? Racesimcentral? I can't remember!

Malc, who reads waaay too much about gpl ;-)

For the record - this fixed my problem yesterday! (I think the drivers are
actually win2000 drivers, but my sound is back!  There is no noticeable
difference in sound quality otherwise either.

Willard.

Well, my result was that it fixed the sound but introduced *horrific* GPL
stutters.  Back to the old drawing board...

Thx for taking notice, tho :-)

Audigy works flawlessly here. Only oddity I see is blinking mouse
cursor but it works fine. Haven't seen a lockup or CTD yet in several
hours of messing around. I'm using XP Pro...

Hi Mark,

only one part of the LHS sucks... the middle term ;-)

Running GPL / SBlive fine here on Loss98SE, ECS Mainboard
(K7S5A/LAN).

Mark,

I was running an Audigy Gamer with XP Home and a via based mb, with no issues. I replaced it this past Sunday with an Audigy 2, and it works fine as well. I guess your mileage may vary...

Thx all.

I've tried all suggestions to not much avail so will consider options for
alternative soundcards.  There's another thread on this subject, I see...

GPL + XP + SBLive = BAD! How's Audigy?

I had a Live! and had *that* problem.  Eventually upgraded drivers fixed it.
I then upgraded to an Audigy and didn't have *that* problem.  Then I
upgraded from Win98SE to XP Pro and *that* problem magically returned, even
though no hardware changes were implemented.

I tried applying the drivers from my Audigy CD again (which only had up to
Win2000, but I assumed, wrongly, that they would be the same as the XP
drivers) and the problems got worse.  I downloaded newer drivers and then
got blue screens and the original way back when problem of the volume
resetting to full after every re-boot returned.

Tried moving to different slots, even though I remembered that did nothing
when I first got my Live!...still did nothing.

To make a long and frustrating story short, it is a driver problem.  If you
have an OEM version of the card, then the drivers are not available online.
If not, just get the latest drivers and it should solve any problems.  My
solution was to get my vendor to burn me a copy of the current OEM driver
disk that comes with the card, because it contains XP drivers.  Solved both
*that* problem and the volume resetting immediately.

GPL + XP + SBLive = BAD! How's Audigy?

by Jordan Sack » Fri, 01 Nov 2002 08:13:25

I have the SBLiveXPDrvUPdate.exe file that contains what I believe are the
3509 drivers. These are the recommended drivers for XP SBLive and GPL. I
have had some success with them. What happens is when I go to the trax
either I get a staticy sound from the engine revs OR I get no problems at
all. A definite improvement but not totally satisfactory since it takes a
few resets to get the static out.
My question is what is the best way to install this exe file. I just ran it
over the top of everything, meaning I only executed the exe file and let it
write over whatever was there. Is there a better way to install the drivers?
I'd be willing to try it since there is some improvement already.

Thank you:
