GPL Online Pileup Frustration

OK - GPL online racing is fantastic. Lets get that out of the way first.

However.. I've found whenever I enter a race with 12+ cars there is a 95%
chance of a first bend pileup - even when people are well behaved. It
just seems that any warping effect whatsoever leads to disaster. Last
night at Kyalami, I had to stop dead in the middle of the track at the
first corner where the pileup was - watching cars jumping into the air,
spinning round and round, bursting into flames etc. I was trying to pick
a way through but no, someone warped into me and I was hurled into the
air to join the fray.

This isn't too bad if you can press shift-R and get back into the race.
This brings me to the question - why does anyone run PRO races? It just
seems unfair to be out of a race in the first few seconds through no
fault of your own!

I appreciate the realism of having realistic damage once the race is
under way, but until this problem is sorted out, no one should run Pro
servers. Probably the best way would be to have collisions turned off for
the first 1/2 lap. This wouldn't be realistic but neither is the crazy
antics of an online pileup.

Good idea: Shift-R should be usable during the first minute of the
game, even on PRO races. Now that would save a lot of frustration. I
had the same thing too yesterday. 17 drivers, I qualified 6th, had a
good start, and in Curve Grande someone thought he could take it full
speed in fifth gear. He rammed me from behind.
Allthough this was not a warping problem but more of a stupid human
driver behind me problem, it was frustrating to be out of the race so
soon after 20 minutes of qualifying.

Still, the best thing to avoid starting pileups is to qualify 1th...

No doubt that this "problem" affects every online racing sim/game but that's
why leagues are formed and password races come up. Try to find a group that
runs clean and run clean yourself, it will still happen but ...........   As
for me I, when joining pickup races on WinVroc I could care less about where
I qualify, the other night I was last on the grid and was looking 5 cars
ahead I saw it coming and picked my way thru the carnage ( a little luck
helps) and was in 2nd place by turn two, a couple laps later  the leader spun
and I went on to win, and I drove pretty conservatively the whole time.
To quote someone "to finish first you must first finish"
another quote " it's easier to lose a race on the first lap than to win it"
Another race someone decided to pass me into turn one and make it 3 wide into
curva grande.....
Keep racing,

Now you know how it feels when your name is Schumacher and Hill knocks you
off the track just like that. (Monza and Silverstone 95)

Or when same Schumacher see's his title evaporating in Australia,

Unfortunately this wouldn't necessarily have solved your "stupid human"
problem:-)

I always dread that 1st turn at Rouen - it's a real bottleneck and anyone
who doesn't brake enough - BAM!

yes, but you will see a lot less idiots on pro servers. our GGPLC server
runs pro races for some weeks now and we have very few pileups. I think
that the combination of a 1x1 staggered grid (we use the distance 6 of
bart westras grids) and PRO helps a lot against pileups and the "human
problem". if you know that you can do a shift-r, you will not be as
careful as without ...

That's true, but sometimes the pile-up is nobody's fault - just unlucky
warping at a critical situation with the cars close together.

yep, but with intermediate, you have the next one 2 turns later and then
I am sure annoyed and quit.
