Look for hosts that are using some common sense with regards to the number of
drivers they are allowing. If you see 25 to 30 allowed, chances are, there is
going to be warp.  Try pinging before you join, although a good ping to a host
does not guarantee anything, but it increases the odds of a good experience.  I
host races with a cable setup and usually allow 15 max drivers and mess with
Latency caps, setting the Latency anywhere from 250 to 400.  It seems I have a
bit of a problem sometimes when setting to 400 or more, but not sure on this one
yet.

Take a look at this site:

http://www.speedguide.net/index.htm

If you don't mind doing some reading there is some helpful information there.
Simply having cable doesn't guarantee a perfect connection, but in this case,
unless you're hosting, you're more than likely at the mercy of the host and
his/her connection.  The best solution I can suggest is join a league, the
difference is night and day.  Second suggestion would be to make a list of any
hosts with whom you've had good connections and good races in general, then try
to stick with races from that list.  Since joining a league I hardly join
pick-up races at all anymore, it simply isn't worth the aggravation.

I connect with a dial up account and have found that ping times have little to do
with warping. The biggest factor seems to be the amount or lack thereof of packet
drops.
Simply hit Ctrl Y for a wealth of information. If you see packets being dropped
skip it. I haved raced in races that pinged at 200 or so with latency of .18 and
worse that were absolutely rock solid as they had zero packet drops.

I think the following is very important for enjoying your online
racing.  Make sure you ping yout connection several times before
connecting.  I find on my net connection a ping of less than 100 is
required for a rock solid connection.  I am really happy when I can
get a ping of 80 or less.  Latency ideally should be 0.01->0.20ms.
Also when you join, pay attention in practice if cars are warping in
the pit lane, if they are then exit, becuase it will be worse duirng
the game.  Avoid joining a server with pings of 200 or above.  Make
sure you don't have your antivirus software, icq, aol messsenger, or
wonswap running in the background taking more of your bandwidth.

Okay, the problem that N3 has with online play is really
dropped packets.  The fewer dropped packets, the more "fluid" the race
will be.  So now all you have to do is reduce the dropped packets.
SOOOOO.... EVERYONE get a program called "EasyMTU."  Win95 is TERRIBLE
about having the "MaxMTU" setting in the registry set for an ethernet
network (which doesn't work for shit with a modem - cable, DSL or
analog).  Windows 98 is a little closer - but still wrong.  There are
1 or 2 other registry tweaks that this program will interactively
change for you, too.  It will even make SUGGESTIONS and let you undo
any changes.

        ALTER YOUR MTU setting!

Does this work well with cable modem? Should I use the recommended
settings in EasyMTU or should I tweak something particular for cable?
The documentation doesnt tell much within the program.
