Uhm, no. If you're using the DirectInput driver you can have multiple
controllers, and the one you're using doesn't have to be the first. As
a matter of fact you can use multiple controllers at the same time.
You can select a different controller by clicking the golden arrows.
Make sure the controllers are calibrated correctly in Windows before
you're using them in GPL.
The only problem I can think of is that the controller you're using
does have a range larger than GPL can handle. (Over 2000 IIRC).
