GPL, Voodoo5 Frustrations

by BRH » Tue, 13 Mar 2001 12:54:13

After replacing my 2 Voodoo2's with a Voodoo5, I'm experiencing some
minor annoyances within GPL.

Although the video drivers provided on the Voodoo5 CD (Version
4.12.01.0543, dated 5-16-2001) work with GPL out-of-the-box, the driving
screen has an annoying flicker on top and on the left side, when using
FSAA.  I'm told that updated drivers would eliminate that.  After
eradicating every vestige of Voodoo, 3Dfx, and Glide from my system
(Registry, Windows and Windows\System directories) beforehand, I tried
installing  updated drivers -- namely Drivers 1.04.00, 1.03.00 and
1.04.01 beta, (all downloaded from www.3dfx.com).  However, with each of
these drivers, my mouse  locks up at the GPL opening screen.

To be specific, although I can click on the red and green buttons,  it
_appears_ that they are being pressed, but nothing happens.  However, if
I click on Best Laps, View a Replay, etc, I can get to those screens.
However, once there, I again cannot press either red or green.

I probably should have started this post with these questions:

1.  Is it even worthwhile pursuing this further for GPL?.  The main
reason I would like to update my video drivers is so that I can activate
"anti-aliasing" (AA) within the Graphics Quality settings in GPL.  (I'm
told that the newer drivers would allow this).

2.  I already have FSAA set to 2 for Glide within 3Dfx tools.  Does that
mean that AA is already in effect within GPL, or not?  Or does AA in GPL
only activate by clicking on it within GPL?  In other words, do the
updated Voodoo 5 drivers make a significant difference for GPL?

I just want to optimize the GPL performance of my new vidcard.  After
all, that's why I bought it.

Windows95 OSR2.

Any help with this, from Voodoo5 GPL'ers would be appreciated.  (I would
appreciate NOT receiving  responses saying that "You shoulda bought a
______ instead".  )

Thanks.  And sorry for the long post.

First are you using the v1.2 of GPL?  Get that installed.  Then, YES the
Voodoo does
AA automatically,  in fact you'll probably find you can NOT check the aa box
in
GPL.  But trust me...it's worth it...Just about any driver dated from
November on should rock with gpl.  You will see a little edging at the far
sides of the game window...but I never notice them while driving.  2xfsaa in
glide will give you good results at 800x600.  You may have to play with the
detail sliders some to get a solid 36fps.

yes....best card for use with gpl

yes...see the first part of my reply.
i think www.slotweeks.com (that url is from my feeble memory..so you may
have to search for slot's site.)  has a faq on setting up the various
features of the
V5.

GPL, Voodoo5 Frustrations

First, nothing but a Rendition card will let you access the AA setting in
GPL.  The Voodoo5 handles the AA on its own.

I'm waiting for my PCI Voodoo5 to add to my GF2, so I can't tell you much
else, but something you might want to look at is an OS update - running
Win95 these days makes your system rather vulnerable to anomalies.  You
could have an outdated DLL or system component that is effecting things in
unknown ways.  No way to be sure if this is contributing to you problem, but
an upgrade to Win98SE (*not* WinME) would be highly recommended.

Best of luck - all the people I've heard from swear that 4xFSAA on a Voodoo5
makes GPL look like a new game.  That's why I bought one............

........and that's exactly why I bought one.  Thanks for the explanation of AA
as it relates to GPL and the Voodoo5.  I read at www.simracingmag.com that the
updated V5 drivers require DirectX 8 (or 8a).  I'm using DX 7.0a, so I guess
that I'll have to update DX and try again.

Thanks again!

Its your windows 95osr2 thats causing the problem.
I had the same problem that you had, its caused by a memory lockup with
win95.  Are you running any memory managers?  If so get rid of them.  And
then add this line to your windows/system.ini file:  (Look at your 386Enh
section in system.ini for any memory managers)

[vcache]
MaxFileCache=16384
MinFileCache=16384

Since you have so much memory, you can set this higher or lower as you need.
Some very large programs, like adobe photoshop, might take longer to load.
I have 128mb ram and set mine at 8192 with no problems at all.  I do use a
tnt1 card though, so if this doesnt work try this this fix from the winvroc
website:

No, I'm not running any memory managers, but I'll give that system.ini tweak a
shot.

Thanks.
