Strange GPL Lock Up with Voodoo5

Strange GPL Lock Up with Voodoo5

by BRH » Mon, 12 Mar 2001 14:57:01

After installing my new Voodoo5 card, and playing around with some
graphics settings within GPL, I find that GPL locks up up my system,
rock hard, when entering a race.  One second after entering the race
screen (in practice), my entire system freezes.  The countdown clock
stops, I have no mouse cursor and no green or red buttons.  The only way
to recover is for me to pull the power cord.  The system's reset button
is unresponsive.  The strange thing is that I have no problem using
Training mode.

This problem surfaced only after I removed all glide dll's from within
the GPL directory and subdirectories, as I thought that they were only
needed for my old Voodoo2's.  I would not have bothered with doing that,
except that I was getting an annoying flicker at the top of the race
screen in GPL, and thought that it might have been a conflict stemming
from the old V2 drivers.

Intelllimouse.

Does anyone have any thoughts as to what the problem might be?  Did I
***something up?

Thanks.

Go to www.simracingmag.com
He did a long write up about that.  The long and short of it is that it only
happens in one situation and that's when using 2x FSAA I think.  One fix for
this is to use the D3D patch from papy and run it under D3D instead of 3dfx
glide.  I'm sure there are other solutions and I've heard that with the new
V5 drivers this doesn't happen anymore, but I can't tell you for sure.

BTW, the V5 is the best thing that ever happened to GPL for me, makes it
look like a whole new game.

Hope this helps,
Rick Miller

It is a problem with the original drivers.  Get the newer drivers from
Last November
and you won't have any gpl problems with 2xfsaa.  Unfortunatley,.  I don't
have a link
to a site with archived 3dfx drivers...I did...but housecleaning my hard
drive sorta kinda
wiped 'em out.  Somebody here should have a url.  There are a few 3d ***
sites that
have some of the newer drivers.

Strange GPL Lock Up with Voodoo5

I have a similar system with similar problems, but not all the time about 1
in 10 times this happens, and usually when trying to join an online race. I
just live with it, as I would lose more time trying to fix it than the time
I lose re-booting.
Oh, and I find CTRL-ALT-DEL once followed by ESC then ENTER gets your mouse
back sometimes, but it doesn't want to click anything... :-)
