GPL D3D and voodoo5

trouble ....

I had been borrowing a voodoo3 for about a week to test in a new kx-133
700MHz Athlon system.

With the voodoo3 NFS Porsche, Gran Prix Legends, and 3DMark2000 ran great.

In fact the voodoo3 was so great that I went out a picked up a voodoo5 of my
own.  Heck everyone knows that a 5 gots to be better than a 3, Right?

After installing the voodoo5 and drivers, I ran Gran Prix Legends again, and
all was fine( I hadn't tried NFS or 3DMark yet ) .

I installed the patch from Papyrus as I wanted to see what FSAA was all
about.

The game would not start, the system froze upon loading, and so did NFS and
3DMark after further investigation.

I deleted the D3D dll from the GPL game root directory( the one the patch
installed), and now Gran Prix legends works fine.

NFS and 3DMark200 are still dead .

Are there issues with D3D and the voodoo5?  Any ideas?

I run GPL D3D and NFSPU flawlessly with my V5.  Actually, I had trouble with
4x FSAA under glide in GPL and now it's perfect with D3D.  Search this ng
using remarq or dejanews for a "fix" for the V5 driver.  It involves going
to the control panel under device manager and selecting Voodoo5 instead of
3dfx device.  This may solve your problem.  BTW, V5 is MUCH better than the
V3, you've made a good choice.

I'm having the same problem with a similar system:
    Athlon 700MHz
    ASUS K7V (KX-133 chipset)
    SB Live! X-Gamer
GPL runs great, but everything else freezes whenever the game switches to 3D
mode.

I emailed 3Dfx tech. support several times and they initially tried to help
me.  Unfortunately I think they gave up on me because I haven't heard from
them in several weeks.
The last thing they told me was that I had a IRQ conflict.  So I removed ALL
the PCI cards from my system and tried that.  Still same problem.  I sent
them 3 more emails and they refused to answer any of them.  I finally gave
up and put my Voodoo3 back in.

If you or any one else comes up with a solution, could you let me know.
Right now I have a $300 card that I can't use and can't return (7 day return
policy).

James

P.S.  The device manager displayed the proper "Voodoo5" instead of "3Dfx
device".

Do you mean GPL freezes when it switches to 3D mode?  There is a known
problem with GPL and V5 under Glide and FSAA.  With x2 FSAA it freezes, and
with x4 FSAA it works OK, but a lot of people have problems with mouse
trails screen overlap, etc. etc.  3Dfx are aware of this and are working on
a solution I believe.
However, there should not be a problem with the D3D rasteriser.  There is
some texture tearing in FSAA modes, but in general there has not been a
problem for me or others - and the mirrors look great!

yeah, we nearly have the same setup.

ak72(kx133) mainboard
sb live
voodoo5

Just like you GPL runs great, except for under D3D, and all other
games/benchmarks crash when switching to 3D mode.

I'm curious is your voodoo3 PCI or AGP?

No, GPL runs great with V5.  I was running with graphics options on and full
detail in 1024 x 768 w/ x4 FSAA and it was awesome!!

Unfortunately with every other game I tried it would lock up (SBK 2000,
GP500, F1 2000, NFS PU, and SCGT).  I tried every mode:  single chip, normal
(no FSAA), and x2/x4 FSAA without any success.  I also re-formatted my hard
drive and re-installed Win98 to insure no conflicts with my previous
Voodoo3.  Still no luck.  I really expected more from 3Dfx especially since
their previous cards have always been great.

Hi, Stephen

It's AGP.

James --

I've got the voodoo5 working now with GPL/D3D , NFS and 3DMark2000 .

I had to uninstall the VIA 4x/133 AGP driver.

Weird thing though, now my 3DMark2000 scores are slightly lower than with
the voodoo3 PCI .
