I'm buying a new system soon and had a pentium III 500 in mind, but all
I hear on this newsgroup is how crappy pentium III's are. What's the
problem? I'm looking to the future with this one but you guys are making
me unsure about buying the thing.
Any comments?

If I was buying a computer now I'd be looking at the highest of the
Celerons (466?) and OCing it to the max (500+). PIIIs will be more
attractive when the clock speeds start getting over 600. But hopefully
we'll get PIII based Celerons by then :)

Hei i just got a cel 466 on a abit bx2.0 and it runs fine on 525 75*7
maybe faster with som tweeks (starts on 582 but hangs on win startup maybe
more power will make it go ).
Anyone know of a place that has som bios setup for the bx20 mail me.

David's advice is spot on and is exactly what I told myself 6 weeks
ago when I decide it was time to upgrade my ancient p233MMX.
My decision to upgrade came after I downloaded a replay for spa and to
my complete horror and dismay, this guy went around it in 3:14s, when
I spent hours just trying to stay on the track, something had to give,
it was time. I am one of those who waited too long to upgrade and
ended up missing the boat without even realizing it.
 I bought a case with a mainboard fitted with 256 PC100 memory and a
PII 450, they call it "an upgrade pack".  I bought that and a voodoo3,
a sblive sound card, Philips usb speakers and a 19'' monitor (which I
won't upgrade for the next 2 years) and WOW! I can actually play at
1280x1024 res and I have a 36ps solid apart from the start. I clocked
the V3 to 175MHz, stuck a pentium fan to it. Since then I tend to rush
home from work, eat, and I have to be dragged off the computer by the
other half, otherwise is hard to stop going around the circuit again
and again. I've great sound, great picture (Mitsubishi Diamond Pro
flat screen, not LCD, provide you fix the darkness prob in GPL for he
V3). yesterday I orded the Aura Interactor, for only $20 you owe it
yourself, I've tried it on and it adds a lot to certain games, GPL
specially because of its great sound engine.
My old system was a mediocre p233mmx with 128mb EDO, an 8mb V2 and
sound blaster SBAWE32, I must say I spent a bit more than expected but
it's been well worth it, nowadays I can't imagine how someone could
play GPL on p233mmx or similar low spec pc's aaaaargh!
I will probably upgrade again around March next year.
I think the PIII was premature and Intel knows it.

Regards,

MAO

PS*  Since my upgrade I've graduated to solid 1:28s at monza and 3:18s
in spa are popping up in races now! And the "ring" is nearly "coming"
to me, I think.

Ok Erik, that was the warranty of your CPU out the window, don't post
stuff like that in newsgroups that your PC supplier reads  :-)

All future graphics drivers and games will take use the PIII instructions to
improve frame rates well above what an overclocked Celeron can do. Get a
PIII and you will be laughing at the Celeron overclockers in a month or two.
The AMD K7 looks good but we will have to wait on that one.

The Celeron doesn't support the new instructions. Already some of the drivers
(TNT 1.88 for instance) use these instruction to gain framerate. Soon games
will directly use the instructions to increase frame rate as well. look at the
scores for 3DMark 99 when comparing Overclocked Celeron's and PIII's at the
same clock speed. The PIII's kill them becuase 3DMark 99 support the new
instructions! Overclocked Celerons have had their day in the sun. PIII's ain't
perfect but the best choice at the moment. Now if only they would hurry up
with the XEON III so I can replace my dual XEON's currently in my games
machine......

I don't think they are crappy for performance reasons. It is probably
price Vs performance compared to P2-450's.

The advice the others gave is really good. You should be able to get
P2-450's for relatively cheap. The advice I always give, is to buy the
fastest CPU with the most memory and largest harddrive that you
can afford :-)

thanks for the advice, people. Now I am wiser but no wiser. I'm running
an AMD K6II 300 and my framerate is around the low twenties.
What to do....what to do...oh, what to do? My wife tells me I should
spend the computer money on food and clothing and stuff like that. What
does she know. I want to live....I want to live. I want to see trees and
grass...and clouds and...and...all sorts of other high resolution stuff.
Oh, god, I'm so confused.

Well after you get that divorce I see in your future you should be
a happy gamer :-)

Greg,

Nahh..  They are always bluffing.  My wife constantly threatens me with that
and I keep telling her to get the papers drawn up and remember she gets 50%
of everything,   including the debts ;)

ROFL

disclaimer - My wife and I have a wonderful marriage and she is very
supportive in my spending way too much time and money on all my sim racing
ventures =)

LOL!

It's not her fault she's a woman... women just don't understand
computer games and simulators. Nor to they understand the thrill we
get from them.

<Please, Please, Please, don't flame me for this! I swear it was just
a joke! ;-)>

I have to agree with this, in part.

Over the next few months we will see the release of the Pentium III
600MHZ and the AMD K7, which, from what I hear, is going to beat the
Pentium III's off the shelves.

I don't agree however that 'whatever you get now will be old by
September'. If he bought a Pentium III 500MHz, it would NOT be
concidered old in just 3 months time. Yes, there would be a superior
processor available, but that would not make the P3 500MHz, by any
means, "old".

Being at the end of an era, and if I had a P233 or comparable, I would just
go out and buy a Celeron 300a for $49.00, and an ABIT BH6 for $90.00. You can
get a Maxtor 6gig (Ultra DMA drive for $140.00. Anyway you can see where Im
going.
You can overclock the Celeron to 450 with no problems at all from what I am
reading. Most guys are setting turbo on for 103 bus speed and getting 464 out
of them.

When fast bus and CPU's come out, I would then take a serious look at
spending some cash.

My 2 cents

Rick
