Pentium III 450 MMX (was: Pentium III 500)

Thanks for all the responses to my question about the pentium III 500. I
decided on a Pentium III 450. I'm seeing ads for a pentium III 450
MMX.Is there a difference between a Pentium III 450 MMX and a Pentium
III 450? Also, the system I'm looking at has an intel bx440 motherboard.
I haven't a clue about what's good, what's bad, what's coming, what's
going.

Yep P3 450 is the best chip at a reasonable price this month !!!!

But soon the 500 will be dropping, (you can't wait forever though!)

No.  All P2, P3 and Celeron chips have the MMX instruction set included.
Now, the P3s have what used to be called the MMX2, then the KNI and now the
SSE instruction set which is basically akin to AMD's 3DNow! as it does for
3d instructions what MMX did somewhat for multimedia instructions.  As the
new software, especially games, roll out and start taking advantage of the
SSE (see Q3A but not GPL..I already asked Randy about it) you will see a
marketed improvement over the a P2.

Motherboards..mms, I'd go with an Abit BX6 version 2.0 motherboard which is
a Slot1 (needed for the P3) Intel BX440 chipset based mb.  Has 5/2 PCI/ISA
slots, 4 DIMM slots...jumperless settings too which are nice.

Anyways, apparently with the latest Intel based roadmap it appears the Slot1
is doomed and Socket370 is going to come of age since it appears all future
chips will have on-chip L2 caches.
