:    If I was buying a computer now I'd be looking at the highest of the
: Celerons (466?) and OCing it to the max (500+). PIIIs will be more
: attractive when the clock speeds start getting over 600. But hopefully
: we'll get PIII based Celerons by then :)

I'd be looking at Celerons also!!

I should receive my new P3 550,  128meg,  25gig,  TNT2,  etc, etc ,
any day now.  I'm upgrading from a P90 which I've had since mid 94.
For all this time I've been watching hardware development and
following the  "you gotta buy sometime" verus  "wait for X to arrive"
debate. I have obviously been waiting.
In these last 5yrs there has ALWAYS been a significant hardware
development just around the corner and I see no end to it in the
foreseeable future.  The reality of it has been that for the last 2yrs
I've played practically no games because I've been so frustrated and
pissed off by lousy frame rates.  It doesn't matter if you buy now or
if you wait 3 more years,  it will be great for a while and then start
to fall behind in performance.  The question is:  how long are YOU
willing to wait ?

If you bought the most up-to-date system you could find, today, it
would be fine for any game you buy in the near future, but only if you
ewre to add a Voodoo3, or even Voodoo2 - or perhaps TNT2, when it
arrives.

This is _always_ going to be the case however. That's evolution for
you!

Neat! And since it has a TNT2, you won't need to buy a Voodoo3 for it
either!

We should soon be seeing computers with more than 128MB of RAM coming
out soon. I can't wait!

What's the 25gig part however? The hard disk size?

If you want to wait for a system which will never be out dated, don't.
It will _never_ happen! You could wait til the end of time and there
would STILL be a guy down the pub who boasts about a machine faster
than yours!

It's a simple fact of life, a bit like the Stalks who deliver babies.

You won't want to hear that I play GPL on a Pentium MXX 166MHz with
32MB of RAM and a single Voodoo2, will you?

Yes,  hard drive.  It sounds excessive,  but when I bought the P90 the
largest drive available was 1 gig.  People said that it was a waste of
money and it would never get filled up.  Well it was full years ago,
and the way software is bloating these days I suspect that in a few
years the 25gig will look just right.  On the other hand I could
easily have saved money buying a smaller drive now,  and adding more
in the future as I needed it when it was cheaper.

25GB of HDS is awesome! My PC has only 2.9GB of hard disk space, which
is barely enough to install 4 or 5 of my favourite games.

My laptop has a larger hard disk, of 6.4GB, and I thought that was big
enough, but 25GB? Ace choice!

You're right that soon 25GB wil become a standard. At the current
time, most new computers come with around 10GB, sometimes 14GB of HDS,
and when you think about how large a full install of new games can be
(400MB and upwards!), a new computer should NEVER come with anything
less than 10GB!

Umm...I have a computer with 256 MEG and I have for quite a while..where have
you been?

20+ GIG hard drives have been out for a while, too...

Stalks?  Stalks of what?  Corn?  Beans?  I hope they aren't too high, or they
might interfere with the STORKS.

So will GPL get a boost from these newer drivers for PIIIs or only
new games Mark?

Trade your wife in on a Dual Xeon III 600. You won't regret it!

And she is looking over your shoulder as you type! My wife is very supportive as

My computer never gets a headache. It is always ready to play when I am. It
doesn't blow up every twenty eight days and I don't have to turn it on unless
I wan't to play. It never complains about me not paying it enough attention
and it's learned to be quiet whn I am watching TV. I can always trade it in
on a new sexier model!
