No FF in GPL!

by Peter C. Oxfor » Fri, 15 Jun 2001 23:34:04

Just got GPL, via mail, and installed it, upgraded to latest version, added
some tracks. Everything works great but no FF.

Added te line:
[ Joy ]
allow_force_feedback = 1    ;
to the core.ini as indicated, but nothing.
I've got a LWFF, WindowsME, loaded PC.

Any ideas?

did you enable it in the core.ini file?  change it from 0 to 1

Peter,

If that line is all you added, you need to tell the program more.  Here is a
copy of my core.ini file pertaining to force feedback.  BTW, the force
feedback in GFL is the best I've seen in any racing game, once you get it
tweaked properly.

[ Joy ]
allow_force_feedback = 1                 ; Use FF if device has it
force_feedback_damping = 0.080000       ; force feedback damping coefficient
force_feedback_latency = 0.085000        ; force feedback latency (secs)
max_steering_torque = 355.500000         ; steering torque in N*in giving
max device force

Great ff setup guide here:

Spend enough time on tweaking it untill it's perfect, in the end it's
so much worth it :)

Thanks for the prompt response. But...
I pasted your settings into core.ini with no result.
Disabled the center spring globally, in the wingman profiler, but it's still
present in GPL.
I know the FF works, because I just loaded Nascar 4 for a test drive. The
center spring is now disabled in that game. Have the latest drivers for the
Wingman.
Mysterious.....

Peter,

I have the older LWFF, with the newest Logitech profiler.  I noticed that I
also have "Apply Profile at Launch" unchecked.  Maybe yours is checked?

Are you sure you're not playing around with the
core.ini.sample file, instead of just the core.ini file?
Make sure you can see file extensions in windows.

Yeah, this is almost definitely what's wrong. This is usually the problem
when people have trouble getting FF working in GPL.

Peter, you need to check the file is definitely called core.ini and not
core.ini.sample.  When you install the 1.1 or 1.2 patch for GPL it creates a
dummy file that GPL won't use and you have to rename it manually.  Either
right-click and select 'rename' or use a dos-prompt.

Yes, apparently, this was the problem. (Brilliant programming, Papyrus-
NOT!). I find that the FF is pretty feeble, especially the collision
effects. Maybe it's a question of playing with the settings.

I'm tending to juge GPL by the only other driving sim I own, N4. Not fair, I
know; GPL is 3 yrs old. I think N4 is absolutely brilliant, aside from the
understated damage effects. I know some have complained about the AI, but
for those interested in online racing this doesn't matter so much. The
fundamental difference between F1 and NASCAR, IMHO, is that the latter needs
human competitors to be fun; hotlapping seems an absorbing option on road
courses but not ovals. Unfortuately, the racers one meets on Sierra are a
pretty immature group and I'm 42yo. GPL, if I ever get is set up properly,
will be fun either way- solo or online.

Thanks for your reponses.

Stick with it Peter, it's worth the effort.  Overall, I'm more pleased with
the force feedback in GPL than I am NASCAR 4.  It's sort of confusing
because the lower you make that torque number, the harder the force feedback
gets.
