GPL Rank Question

by Murray Shield » Wed, 04 Jul 2001 21:27:30

My current GPLRank is 91.71, which I guess that I am happy with because
there are a number of tracks that I have not worked hard at yet (most
notably Nurburgring). I am within 107% on all tracks but the Ring, and under
Papy's time on Monza.

But...

My Watkin's Glen time is currently slightly over at 1.07.09. In an online
race vs a friend I managed a 1.06.83 during practice (my first and only sub
07), but my computer crashed before I could exit cleanly, meaning that the
time was not saved to my driver.ini!

I have tried to duplicate my time on track, but keep coming ever so close.
Is there any way of editing the driver.ini to get that time "back"? I even
have a replay that was saved before I crashed to prove that I did the time.

Or is the number to the left of the time a code that prohibits me from
editing?

Thanks...

Muzza

Murray,
How did you save the replay if your computer crashed? Do you mean you
came off the track, saved the replay & before you could get out of GPL it
crashed? Just curious.. Cheers Thom_j.

GPL Rank Question

Was playing online with a friend at the time and I had some serious crashing
problems (solved completely now by shutting down my ZoneAlarm firewall
whilst playing on the net). It would crash entering or leaving race mode
(but not always).

Finished qualifying, looked at my times, went "WOOHOO!", saved the cut
replay, then crashed when I tried to join the race that was about to
start... :-(

GPL Rank Question

by Don Scurlo » Thu, 05 Jul 2001 01:54:42

Hi Murray. The answer is a definite no. As far as GPLRank is concerned, editing
your player.ini file to do anything except delete bogus/warped times is
seriously frowned upon. Further, just because you have a replay doesn't insure
that the time is valid.  It's entirely possible to save a replay of a warped
lap, it can be difficult to tell it it's warped or not, and we don't want to
get into the viewing of replays except to verify new world records. The best
hotlap site there ever was, Schubi's, only accepted laps done in training mode
to ensure that it wasn't done online and therefore couldn't be warped. If you
did it once Murray, you can do it again. Get your self in training mode and set
a new PB.

Editing your driver.ini to add a lap that u think should be there isnt
really allowed ...the theory is that if youve done it before then u can do
it again. If gplrank allowed .ini editing it could be hard to police.  srry

Thanks to all who replied!

I understand that it is frowned upon (I do not want to cheat) but I beat
Papy's time and I just can't show it... An I assure you, I have been trying
to do it again... :-( Lap after lap in the low 1.07's, but only once ever
below (my second fastest and the time in GPL Rank is 1.07.09).

I am very close on a number of circuits (0.09 behind on Silverstone, for
example) but sometimes a margin like that *seems* impossible. Of course, the
biggest thing that I can do to improve my GPL Rank is to spend a month at
the 'Ring.

It is possible to save a replay of a warped lap...true...but it is also
possible for your player.ini to automatically save the time of your warped
lap...I see how you don't want people editing the ini file, but I think his
time is pretty valid...too bad GPL doesn't save your best laps before you
exit manually.

Murray,

Please don't take this the wrong way, because I am not trying to be a

really deserve to have it up on GPLRank?

Hey Muzza,

I feel your pain! I lost 3 PB's when my system crashed each time I tried
to save the replays. I was able to better two of the times fairly
quickly, but I can only get within 1 second of the third :-(

Muzza,

If you really want to beat the Papy times at Silverstone and WG, get a
hold of Maxx's GPLEGS program.(I think thats what he calls it.) I don't
have the URL or Maxx's email handy, but if you give him a shout on RAS
he's usually around. Using his methods have helped me tremendously,
especially at tracks like the aforementioned ones. I believe I dropped
about 12 seconds of my GPL handicap after 2 weeks in Maxx's program.
Also, get yourself a GPL Monsters Rank. Driving all the cars on all the
tracks did something for me that I can't explain. All I know is I
dropped about 5 seconds off my handicap in one weekend(went from +47 to
+42), and beat the stink out of all my Lotus PB's driving the Eagle.
Prior to last weekend, I had only used the Eagle at Spa and Monza. That
car is fast EVERYWHERE!

I got no advice for you at the Ring. I can't figure that place out
either.

Yup, here I am. Find the text adn link to the zip file here :
http://users.bart.nl/~hansvd/school/

As for warped laps (clock smashes is the technical term). You can get
them in offline training mode also but not by just driving around.
They are caused by GPL losing track of your "actual" time and
effectively making a "guess" (can be higher or lower).

If you have a replay of a lap, load it up into Replay Analyser 4.5x
and select Tools->Online Laptime Verifier (even if it was done
offline). It reports clock corrections (quite OK) and clock smashes
(not OK). It will also attempt to report the "actual".
