New Site - GPL Rank

by Phil Le » Sun, 04 Jun 2000 04:00:00

I just found a new GPL site, GPLRank.  Tim Wheatley gave its details on his
site.  The site features a database which calculates your GPL handicap from
your player.ini file and provides an online ranking system.  Very clever!
Thanks to Uwe Schuerkamp for putting it together.  Excellent work.

Unfortunately I am languishing in 46th place out of 52 so if all you
slowpokes out there could submit times it would make my handicap look less
bad.  Eldred this means you!

Cheers

Come one, come all!  It only takes a minute to see how you rank. GPLRank uses a
rating system that gauges your overall mastery of gpl.
Using the sum total time of the included replays as the STANDARD(25:20.19)
GPLRank sums up your best laps from your player.ini file, and finds the
difference between you and the standard. It then instantly gives you a number,
plus or minus in seconds, that shows you how you rate against the standard as
well as everyone else in the gpl community. It also does much, much, more.

Here's what you do:

Come to the site: http://gplrank.schuerkamp.de/
and "create a new account", you only have to do this once, and  please remember
your password.
You will then be prompted to upload your player.ini file. That's it, your done!
GPLRank instantly calculates your rank and displays it in many ways.
Don't worry about being slow, you'll find yourself in some very well respected
company.
Have a good look around, and be sure to check out the "buddy list" feature,
that allows you to create your own custom list of people you want to compare
yourself to. See you there!

Fun site! Just one caution. If you're going to submit your player.ini file
you might want to check it first for any freakishly fast laps. I didn't and
when I went to compare my times with every one else I discovered that one
clock smashed one had snuck in. When I checked the Watkins Glen times
there,in first,  in front of Gregor Huttu and company, was none other than
myself and by more than a second no less!! Now I practice as often as I can
and I can get around the track without too much embarrassment but a Huttu
beater I'm not. A quick edit and reload of the file to the site restored me
to my proper place in the GPL universe.

There seems to be some sort of bug in the system.  I come in
ranked 10th, yet my times rarely threaten the top 50 on each
circuit.  I have no time at Mexico though.  Do you need times at
all tracks to get a proper representation?

Right now myself or another admin will go through the times and remove any
that don't seem right. We are working on an automated system to handle this
in the future.

Everything is in beta form and is a work in progress. It wasn't supposed to
go public for some time but since it found it's way here there was no way to
stop it.

Chris we will look into it. You should not show up on the current rankings
unless you have times for all the original tracks.

Thanks,

Looking into it Cris. Why don't you put in a lap at Mexico and then
update yourself by the "Submit your laptimes" function. Thanks for
pointing it out. Don

No problem Phil. I read what you did on Tims site and it says GPLRank is "Open
for business", and now we are ;-)

110 drivers have submitted so far, lots of big names. It's getting very
interesting seeing how we all compare to one another.
Come and join the fun.  http://gplrank.schuerkamp.de/

He he!!! I don't even rate at all (almost last place but not quite).
But if I get some time to practice in the next few weeks just watch me
climb up the ladder :-) I guess I should work on the nring as that will
shave a bunch of points off.

Is that you at +280.56 Chris? Yes the Ring would be a good place to
put some laps in, or any of the tracks besides Monza and the Glen in
your case ;-) Part of the fun of the Sub Zero Scale is as a motivator
to get yourself Sub Zero, or into the negative numbers, beating all
those original hotlaps. You've almost got the first one with your
1:30.39 at Monza. I'll be watching your progress. --
