GPL Rank - A Few Ideas

by Chris Bloo » Mon, 05 Jun 2000 04:00:00

Firstly let me say that I thouroughly enjoy the GPL Rank idea
and web site and as it's a free service I have no right to
demand anything from it's creators.

I am actually forever in debt to them for allowing a bug which
showed me as the ninth best GPL driver in the world, till I was
stupid enough to question it;-)

I do have a couple of ideas that would add a bit more interest
to the site though:

1) A list of drivers from each country so we can see how we
compare to our compatriots.

2) A seperate "league of nations" based on the average times of
all the drivers from each country.

3) A list of times for each particular car and rankings for each
car if the driver has times from all tracks.

GPL rank is a great idea! It has a lot of potential too. I thought it would
be cool if it could  give us a class designation to make it easier to match
up with others around your own speed.  When races are up on Vroc, they could
have a designation in the description of what class of drivers should enter.
I didn''t think I would even show up in the ranking but was surprised that
I'm #5 at the 'ring out of U.S. Brabham drivers :-)

Thanks Jim we will look into this. I have a feeling in just a couple of
short weeks you will see a lot of changes. As it stands right now GPL rank
is only a couple of weeks old so you can see the progress thats been made.

I would like to see a ranking based on average speed, rather than absolute times. In its present state the Spa and
Ring times have way to much influence, IMHO. Everything else is perfect:)

Your point has been brought up before. There are so many different ways that we
can compare ourselves. This particular scale is a guage of general/overall
gpl competence, and the long tracks matter just as much as the shorter tracks.
Until you've given enough to the game to be decent at ALL the tracks, this
scale will punish you. The biggest variation for all of us will of course be on
the long tracks, but it's the same for all of us. Spa and the Ring are great
tracks Andrea, get practicing!

This is an excellent idea Jim, and it's something that can be implemented
immediately, not by the GPLRank site, but by Vroc race hosts. All people need
do is request a GPLRank range in the race description, eg: -20 to +20, or +150
to +200. Something like that. People that know what GPLRank is and have ranked
themselves will know what it means. Should catch on.

After seeing the MESS raceserver.net caused with N3 rankings (not to mention
impending intervention by papyrus) i dont think this is a good idea.

One thing though ... I noticed while checking other guys' best laps that
there's no error detection in GPL Ranks for warp times. For example, a
driver has his best training time of 1:27.11 in Monza, but a practice time
of 1:25.98!! I'm sorry, but now way! This obvious warp improves his ranking
by over a second ... and that's just one track.

Could it be possible to compare lap times in individual player.ini files to
Schubi's world records or something, and ignore practice and race times that
are faster? just an idea ...

What the hell are you talking about?

First, raceserver.net has no pending legal action from Papyrus.  They're
not doing anything wrong or contrary to the EULA.  I think you're
confusing them with OLR who claims to be providing server hardware for
pay.

Second, how can they mess up rankings when rankings don't otherwise
exist?  Their ranking system is their own.  If you're speaking of
the recent software re-write, they did that to make the ranking system
better.  Sure, lots of people lost what rankings they already had, but
who really gives a shit?  What they have planned is better than what they
had before.

Before spewing shit like that, be sure of what you're talking about.  All
you did was succeed in making yourself look like a moron.

We are working on a way to check for warps and remove them automatically but
for the time being one of the administrators will have to go through and
remove them.

Thanks for your input,

I'm trying to be more forthcoming, but considering I'm a godless ***,

Hey moron, before spewing shit how bout finding out what your talking about.
Raceserver.net has messed up online racing for N3. There are massive issues
going on RIGHT NOW with privacy issues, password abuse, ejection abuse etc,
etc.so shut the *** up and pay attention
