GPL Rank Questions

I'm looking at submitting times etc. to GPLRank to see how well I'm doing
against other GPL drivers (too embarassing to submit this week, but I am
improving)

The site is a little sparse in terms of conditions of submission, so I'll
ask here.

Are you allowed automatic shifting (I can do the throttle and braking
without assistance, but I have trouble co-ordinating the gear changes along
with everything else).

I've currently got the damage mode set to realistic, which can be a bit of a
pain if I'm 7/8ths through the warmup lap at Nurburgring and end up crashing
catastrophically. Obviously using a result in which you used Shift-R would
be inappropriate, but it can be useful if your just about to cross the
start/finish line for the start of a (hopefully) hotlap and you crash.

Since I'm first to reposond, the times are just read from your PLAYER.INI
file, so what ever you did to get that time counts (except change engines or
otherwise fiddling with the default settings of the program.)  By
<Shift-R>ing through a lap, you are costing yourself time, so it isn't a
help unless you can't complete the lap without crashing (like me at the
Ring.)  It doesn't matter which damage mode you run either.

Thanks -  I'm still about 14 minutes at the Ring, but I figured if I slow
down and drive at 7/10ths I'll probably get a much better time, without
bending the car like I usually do on the Ring.

My other track times aren't anything to be proud of either, but at least
they aren't too much slower than 107%.

Cheers
Hamish

Hamish you can use all the drivers aids(they ultimately slow you
down) and no damage. Just drive realistically, meaning don't ride
rails, bounce off bails, cut corners, or do anything a real world
driver wouldn't do. Keep in mind that ANY fastest lap no matter it
was achieve will automatically be logged into your player.ini file
and will show in your fastest laps page. So if you happen to get a
new personal best that you don't feel was cleanly driven, delete it
from your player.ini file before submitting to GPLRank. If you need
any help in that regard let me know.

Okay, for a good decent Ring time, do the following.  Start a race at the
back of the grid and follow the car infront.  Regardless of how slow they
go, stay behind them.  They usually do a lap of about mid 9mins and you've
instantly gained 3 seconds!!!  This stops you blaring around the countryside
crashing into everything that doesn't move.

GPL Rank Questions

Me next Hamish !

Your Rank is entirely based on what you know you can do. You could submit a
totally fictitious driver.ini file which puts you straight into the top 500
but where's the satisfaction in that ? You are playing GPL because you are a
Gentleman ( or Lady ) and you appreciate the satisafaction of
acheivement through hard graft.

You are comparing yourself to others but really you are assessing your own
driving ability.

example 1 : If I clip the barriers around Monaco I consider that a mistake
for me and would disregard the time if it were a personal best , damage on
or not.
example 2 : My fastest Kyalami time is .02 faster than my next fastest , I
submitted the slower lap-time because I was happier with my driving on that
lap. On the quicker lap I slid wide in one bend. That's just me though.

If you run into someone with a similar GPLR to yourself in a race you know
your in for a laugh ,
if your GPLR is a little "optimistic" you're going to be found sorely
wanting. Sidenote - fast hotlaps
don't always indicate a "Good" driver - but that's a whole new topic !

SO ! only you will know what your GPLRank reflects ; you could have two
accounts - one for damage on , one for off , perhaps ?

Excellent suggestion, Book! I will try it tonight, and hope I can stay on
the track for a whole lap ;-)

Being a long time GPLer but always tried to avoid "The Ring" I just started
getting back into GPL to lower all my lap times! "The Ring" is my first goal
of 8:40-8:30 I hope?.....lol This idea John is a really good one & I'm going
to hop in "The Ring" and do just what you have said! Thanx.. Thom_j.

If I hit a barrier while hotlapping, I usually slow down(or stop) so I'm sure
it won't be a PB...<g>

I could stop, back up, watch a commercial on TV, and still have the lap be a
PB :(

I've done this with other tracks, but I still don't seem to be able to keep
up on the Ring. I tend to try and catch up when I fall behind, and end up
overcooking a corner.

The two tracks I'm having most problems with are Mosport and the Ring.

Cheers
Hamish
