A bit like ATI (drivers - but they're getting there)or Gainward (huge
numbers of returns) Gfx cards, IBM Hard drives ( had 6 at work. All 6 have
died), myself, I steer clear of the Sound Blaster range
I have a Hercules Game Theater XP - and it's fantastic

I have a SoundBlaster PCI512, which is a fairly old model, but still works
well with all games.

To answer the question posed in your title, I use a SoundBlaster Live! card.
It works great, and I don't remember having any problems with it. As far as
recommendations, I don't have anything to compare it too, Sorry.

Me too!!! I just switched from a SB Live 5.1 Gamer, to an Audigy 5.1
Gamer (haven't tried the Audigy 2), to a Turtle Beach Santa Cruz and
after a few tweaks, I love it! Music sounds better too!
And, the best part about the TB/SC card is that I got to uninstall all
the ***that Creative put on my hard drives!
I have Klipsch Pro Media 5.1 speakers, if that matters.

Creative call them drivers - but most beg to differ.

Tried on-board sound which worked for GPL but was just a mess with
N2K2.
I went back to Creative and bought an Audigy 2 and I'm glad I did...
I woulda tried a turtle beach SC as people rave about them around here
but couldn't find one. Is it a US only product?
Anyway, that's my experience. Your Mileage, as they say, May Vary.

Mark
It's sold as Videologic Sonic Fury in europe these days... it's
exactly the same card.
It's not completely GPL friendly either, not in WinXP anyway. You need
to set sound hardware acceleration to "basic" to get skid and shift
sounds audible...

Indeed - the nForce 2 sound chipset is superb - and having an integrated
solution gets rid of the world of pain of IRQ mlarkey

I run the Turtle Beach Santa Cruz card on one machine, and a Phillips AE
(706) on another. They both are great cards, but Phillips has poor driver
support. After reading about the Nforce2 sound I may have to try that too.
