OT - DVD & decoder card sound delay problem

by James Pickar » Thu, 15 Aug 2002 12:23:10

Ok, this is OT, but I can bring it back in focus.  It's for watching "Super
Speedway" with  :)

Basically, I have the following setup:

Athlon 1700XP
256RAM
40gig h/d
SiS m/b
GF2 MX400 dual head videocard (29.42 drivers)
RealMagic Holywood Plus Mpeg2 DVD decoder / TV out card
SoundBlaster Live Value! hooked up to surround speaker system (very nice btw
:)
Running Windows XP Pro
Running the RealMagic DVD program, and also a 3rd party 'Eugene DVD Player'
program (both with same results pointing to a hardware / operating system
problem)

I am having a problem with the sound of the DVD getting out of sync with the
graphics.  After 15 or so minutes, the sound starts to lag behind the video
stream, and eventually can become up to 2 to 3 second behind (looks like bad
lipsyncing!).

I have currently setup the sound stream from the DVD decoder card, to output
to the sound card, and consequently I can take advantage of the Surround, 2
strereo output, of the SoundBlaster Live Value card.

The DVD decoder card also has an audio output for the audio stream, but it
is only a single mic jack, stereo output.  I've been told I can put that
straight into the 'Line in' on the sound card, and therefore bypass the
system bus which might aleviate the audio lag issues.

Does anyone have any ideas of how I can fix this problem, because there is
nothing worse than have out of sync speech, or seeing a load of cars scream
by, only to hear thing 3 seconds later!

Any ideas?

Thanks for listening,

James

OT - DVD & decoder card sound delay problem

Hi James,

I remember having that same problem with my Super Speedway (the first DVD I
got after getting the decoder card.) but I dont rem off hand how I fixed it.
I was using the Hollywood plus card and I do remember having problems until
I upgraded to build 17 (tells you how long ago that was)  I havent had the
card in system for a long time as it did make the display darker with the
old Voodoo cards.

I will try to see if I can remember what the fix was if possible.  BTW I was
using it with Win 95/98 at the time I believe, and had that same problem.

If I get any other info I will let you know.  Maybe someone else might
actually remember what the fix was.

sorry :-(   this doesnt seem to be much help.

OT - DVD & decoder card sound delay problem

IMHO?

Get rid of the Decoder card.  You don't really need it any more, and that
daisy-chain system that card uses does decrease your display quality quite a
bit.

Since 800Mhz or so processors came out, the need for hardware decoding has
declined almost completely.  I haven't seen a DVD drive come with one in a
long, long time.

You have way enough horsepower to use a good Software Decoder.  I recommend
PowerDVD XP 4.0 (I use the high-end one that supports DTS and DD5.1).  It
works absolutely perfectly and the picture is awesome.

Your GeForce 2 card does already have _some_ DVD Accelleration in it that
Software Decoders use anyway.

Hey, it's just one less headache (and it can be a BIG one) that you don't
need.

Of course, that's just my opinion.  I could be a donut.
