Sound Problems with N2 & IBM MWAVE card

Sound Problems with N2 & IBM MWAVE card

by Jim Kop » Sun, 26 Apr 1998 04:00:00

I have an IBM Aptiva M40 (Pentium 75 w/24MB ram) that uses an MWAVE
modem/sound card.  Last night I tried to install a soundblaster 32 and a
new modem and remove the mwave card.  Needless to say, I had problems
getting the new cards to work, and since I have a race for an offline
league due Saturday at midnight I reinstalled the Mwave card.

The problem I now have is that when I try to run the game out of dos,
the start up program gets to the point  where the following is
displayed:

Digital Sound
Port 220 IRQ 5 DMA 1

And then the program hangs.  If I run setup in nascar and select no
sound, the game loads normal.  I know that the MWave cards proper values
are 220,5,1 - and when I test the settings in setup I do hear the voice.

Has anyone else experienced this problem, or have any advice for me.  It
is difficult to race with no sound, and it looks like I may have to in
order to get my race in.  Thanks in advance for your suggestions.

I Have an Mwave in an Acer.  If I remember right I had to run the
batch file fastcfg.bat  after exiting to DOS the first time.  This was
in my MWW/DLL folder.  Hope this helps

I'm afraid that I can't help you much, except tell you that the problem is
with your sound card setup.  Chances are when you installed the soundblaster
32 it removed or remed out the lines in your sutoexec.bat file for the mwave
card.  You need to try reinstalling the dos drivers for the mwave card, or
try telling the setup program you have a soundblaster pro or compatible.
This selection will work with 95% of the cards out there, with settings 220,
5, 1.  Let me know if this helps.
