N2 Multiplayer & Lan Card -Dos problem

by Ron » Sun, 14 Sep 1997 04:00:00

Just received and installed my networking package "Network In A Box"
PCI Version by Linksys. Have just a basic network between a P166mmx
and P100. W95 networking is setup and working fine. Tried Nascar2 and
quake so far under W95 with no problem. I have run into a major
setback in dos with Nascar2 multiplayer networking. I lock up on
atleast one of the systems everytime when attempting to Answer/Dial. I
have the dos IPX driver(s) loaded high on both systems. Have also
tested Quake in dos and it works great. The P166mmx has the Intense 3d
(rendition) and the P100 is using a generic S3 onboard. I have tried
loading just the regular (non-3d) nascar2 on both machines when
attempting this Dos connect with the same results. Any ideas as to
what N2 doesn't like about my config/setup for Dos IPX? I would
question whether the driver(s) where/are being properly loaded, ect...
but quake works flawlessly under the same conditions. BTW, Both
systems have the fully(uptodate) "Sierra" patched N2s. This is very
frustrating since the P100 suffers in framerate/performance if I have
to keep running under W95 only. Anyone with any experience getting N2
to work in a (Dos Only) environment on a LAN, please help!

Thanks,
Ron L.

I personally don't know of anyone who has successfully run Nascar2 IPX
using the network software that coes with Win95.

I'm using software I scraped from the Internet.

There are 3 programs, and one configuration file that is needed.

LSL.COM
NE2000.COM (this is the one I'm using,
you may need a different one
based on the type of network
            card you are using)
IPXODI.COM

and finally

NET.CFG

Look on the diskette that came with your Network card
to see if any of these files are available to you.

When I run Nascar2 IPX my system isn't running anything in HIMEM. I'm
not even running HIMEM.SYS itself.

I wish I knew the URL of the web sight that got me started on this.  It
was a good starting point for IPX in dos.

P.S. When I say Dos, I mean restart and use the F8 to get to Command
Prompt only.

Ron,
Hope this helps (I spent a frustrating couple hours w/same symptom.) Can't have
number of opponenets at 39. There are 4 machines on my network currently, so I
set to 34 and all is well :-))).
