I have been using the venerable SB16 for along time. I would like a little
more umph (sp?) in the sound, possibly something with some real balls, what
do you reccomend and why
Thanks

Be sure to go for one of the new PCI soundcards.
I have one based on the Maestro ESS chip as used on the cheaper
new Creative PCI audio card.  It is cheap, quick and gives good quality
in-game and midi sound.  In GP2, I instantly had a 10% reduction in
occupancy due to the lower overhead of PCI against ISA slot usage.

I thought the Creative PCI cards used the Ensoniq AudioPCI chipset.

Why not check out Nureality's surround sound device? They sell the Vivid
3D Pluss for $30. I put it between the line outputs of my SB16 and the
aux inputs of my stereo.  It not only adds a nice bass boost effect, it
also "synthesizes" a convincing surround sound effect from just two
speakers.

The Turtle Beach Montego sounds great, but be warned, you cannot turn off
the joystick port, and if your motherboard, or other existing joystick port,
cannot be turned off, you will not be able to use this excellent card.
Compaq 4880 is one such system.

Oh crap.  I just ordered one.  Do you know if there is a
driver update planned, or some other fix for this?  I'm kind
of thinking about getting one of those PDPI digital cards,
when they offer a PCI unit.

How is the joystick port?  Does it seem solid?

Turning off the device in Win95 did not work for me. Everytime I added the
joystick '95 would hang. I'm not 100% certain, but I think that what you do
from the device manager only disables the drivers, not the hardware, and
this seems to be a hardware problem.
Of course it would be nice if someone proved me wrong, I'd go and get
another Montego card, the sounds were pretty cool!

Are you sure?  I turned off the joystick port by going to Device Manager and
disabling it.  I was then able to use my SB16's joystick port.  I was trying
to see if there was a difference between the SB16's and the Montego's port.
The difference was virtually nil.  Perhaps a 1 fps improvement for the Montego
in F15 (19 vs 18 fps).  Also, no improvement on switching from the SB16 and
Montego for sound.  Some have reported significant improvements.  I saw none
