In case of GPL there is no difference whether soundcard to choose, they both
work fine and make no difference. But bying any you should consider all the
sides of advantages that one have over another.
Basically I wouldn't recommend bying MX-300 for slow machines like Cl-366 if
you are planning to spend some time to play the games using Direct Sound 3D
(such as Rogue Spear, NHL-2000 ,Unreal ) - it requires more CPU power than
SB Live! - this based on the priciples these cards compute the enivronmental
surroundings. But MX300 A3D computes the waves reflecting from objects and
coming back, while Live EMU10K just emulates the aqoustic properties of the
sound that SHOULD be in some type of enivronment. Thus MX-300 has more
accurate oscillograms of sound waves. This makes it superior in Nascar 3
when program calculates the distance to the walls and other cars returning
waves as an echo. The EMU produces music/sound development more than 10
years, their music accessories are great, and I believe they know how to
make sound. Of their designers said something like "we make not soundwaves
that 100% phisically correct, we make the SOUND itself that sounds
correct.." Note that MX-300 game port is not fully compatible with some of
joysticks/pads that use fourth axes to emulate buttons 5 and 6 . I think
this is because the MX-300 game port uses 3V powering the joy, while Live! -
5V. ( But I didn't check it personally). Of course, you can never meet such
a joysticks. Both of cards may work incorrect in some games. Personally, I
met more these issues with MX-300. I don't mean that card wouldn't work, but
some sounds is not the same the developer wanted you to hear. If you mean
the low-priced cards without daughterboards , then SB Live!'s advantage is
digital CD-IN connector. I have both of them and use MX-300 only for Nascar
III .
    The choice is yours.

I've tried both the MX300 and SBLive with GPL and would recommend the
SBLive.  I find that with some tweaking the sound is much fuller and I
could swear I'm hearing more.

As a note, the Diamond MX400 soundcard is close to shipping and will not be
using the Aureal Vortex2 chipset again.  Rather they are going with, damn
forgot who, but the chipset was "supposedly" chosen with game developer help
[yeah, ok] and will support all the DirectX sound features plus A3D 1.0 [no,
not A3D 2.0 like N3 uses because Aureal only allows it to be supported
through their chipset], EAX 1.0 and 2.0

I'm very happy with my SB-Live; it blows away my previous $18 PCI Trident POS
card.
With the old card, I took a big framerate hit anytime there were more than 3-4
sounds playing at once.

affect, even in race traffic.  (K6-2/450)

I found a new  SB-Live Value OEM (just the driver CD and CD-rom jumper cable)
at a computer show for $40!

A GPL fanatic friend has an MX-300.  I'll post a followup with his impressions
ASAP.

Diamond is going with ESS for their chipset in the MX400.
