What is the best sound card out there overall?  Is it one of the SB 32
cards or maybe the new SB 64 card?  Or is it something else?

SB is the best in game compatibility. For digital sound, the noise level
is quite high, for midi, YAMAHA or roland midi card or daughther card give
much better music than the emu midi chipset in AWE.

BTW, in autos simulators, noise level is not a problem, since engine sound
is basically some sort of noise. :)

Original SB, SBPro, non-PnP SB16 are best for game compatibility.  Newer
Creative SB cards have compatibility problems with some older games.  I'd
take an old SB16 overall for the digital side; I'm not willing to trade
off compatibility for sound fidelity.

A separate MIDI card is slightly preferable to a daughter card, assuming
ample ISA slots, because of the WaveBlaster interface stuck note problems.
A Roland SCC-1 is still the best choice for *** music if you can afford
one (because that's what most game MIDIs are composed for) but Yamaha
should eventually supplant Roland, since Roland is no longer making sound
cards.

I can hear my SBPro's noise over the Nascar 1 engine noise.  :->  But it's
compatible with everything, and game digital sound is seldom hi-fi anyway,
so I haven't bothered replacing it.

Not true. Name one game that will not work with the AWE64 or SB32. You can't. They are all SB16
compatible.

Unless you have the Plug and Pray versions. Some have a little trouble
with older DOS stuff.

Even the non-PnP AWE32 had problems with a lot of pre-SB16 DOS games that
required a lot of low memory free.  The necessary compatibility TSR took
up enough low memory that the game wouldn't fit.  Not much of an issue
these days, since every relatively recent game has native AWE32 support.

You still run into glitches, though.  For example, DOS Tomb Raider runs
fine under Win95 with a SBPro or old SB16 card, but has problems with
a PnP SB16, AWE32, or SB32.  Not a problem if you don't mind dropping
to DOS, but the Microsoft Sidewinder Gamepad only works under Win95.

I still maintain that the "best sound card overall" for *** is a
two-card solution: a non-PnP SB16 with a Roland SCC-1.

Many of Lucasarts games have problems with Sb Awe 32pnp.
The only that works great is Rebel *** 2 (specific Awe32 setup).
Tie Fighter, X-wing, Rebel *** 1, Dark Forces, the Dig all had
problems to configure my sound card.  Hope it will work with Jedi
Knight, Rebellion and the awesome X-Wing vs Tie-Fighter.  Awe 32pnp is a
great soundcard with great programs(text'ole and Vienna Sf studio).  But
if you buy this card be warn.  Sb also relaesed SoundBlaster 32 card.
It's not like the AWE32.  So remember for 50$more buy AWE32 not 32.
Thanks a lot,

The new SB AWE64 looks pretty good though.
