Anyone know why exactly Diamond decided to abandon Aureal in favour of
the Sensaura system? Sure, the specs seem decent enough, but considering
how successful the MX300 was, it seems somewhat strange how Sensaura
suddenly gets to ride on fame built solely on an Aureal product.
But then, that's essentially what S3 did with the equally successful
Viper series after acquiring Diamond (with the Savage2K based Viper II).
Just a standard company policy after an acquisition? Maybe S3 has some
connections to Sensaura.

SoundBlaster live X-gamer.  Uses EAX (environmental audio extension) for 3D
positional sound which can take advantage of a 4-speaker set up.  Comes with
3 pretty good games: Descent 3, Need for Speed: High Stakes and Thief.  All
for only $70.

SB Live! does A3D 1.0, but AFAIK that's rather meaningless. MX300 or
other Vortex2 based sound card can provide you with full A3D 2.0
compatibility.

But you should note that the next product in Diamond's MX series will
pretty much abandon A3D, providing only the basic A3D 1.0 support. The
MX400 is based on Sensaura's ESS Canyon 3D and will support EAX 1.0/2.0.

Well correct me if I'm wrong but didn't Aureal recently follow 3dfx's
example and started making their own boards and have since stopped selling
the Vortex chipsets to third parties. If that is true, it would explain
Diamonds move to another sound chip.

That would certainly explain it. Looking at their website they seem to be
going for the OEM market. But it also appears that they're still selling
individual audio chips (like the AU8830 used in Vortex2 cards) to their
partners.
