GPL Controller problem

by Brad Larocqu » Mon, 01 Apr 2002 12:07:09

I use a Microsoft Sidewinder wheel for GPL and use my Sidewinder Pro
stick as a half assed shifter. Here's the problem. It seems that ever
since I chand to directx 8.1 the stick will calibrate ok, but wont stay
that way. Suddenly in the middel of a lap, at random points, the car
will downshift of its own accord. I go to the calibration screen and it
is all messed up. So far I haven't had this problem in N4 which is the
other sim I do this double stick thing with. Any ideas how to fix this
or do I have to go back to dx 8.0a?

I would say its more likely a dirty pot on your SW Pro joystick, but its just a hunch.  I still have
an old SW Pro as well, and occasionally I get little glitches with it, but its because its old, not
because of DX8.1.  I've had the same little glitches with it since about DX6.

OK, next stupid question. What's a pot?

pot is short for potentiometer.....those are the mechanical devices in analog joysticks that convert
the movements into electrical impulses...in other words, try cleaning your joystick with a good
contact cleaner.

All right, I'll do that. Thanks Biz

Uh, one snag. According to the docs, the Sidewinder Pro is a
digital-optical stick, not analog.

Look at the documentation (if you kept it) or on the Microsoft web site for the telephone number to call about faulty hardware.  Usually, they'll replace the whole thing.

What would be a good pot cleaner to get and where would I find it?
Future Shop, Radio Shack, smaller specialy shops?
