The DirectInput is using Win9x's DirectX routines and will have whatever
"deadzone" is incorporated in it. Along with all of the other
"downsides" inherent in DirectX.
The generic setting is Papyrus' direct polling of the controller card
port and is very similar to their excellent DOS routines. This one also
seems to provide a "larger" scale for the reading of the input.
With DirectInput, I was able to run with a higher "linear" setting, but
I didn't feel I had the same precision I got with the generic setting
with less linear setting.
I think the latter choice will depend on the quality of your game
controller and controlling device. Whether there is a difference in the
overhead, I don't know. But for my book, Papyrus has it right and
MickeySoft has it wrong.

Marc.
For all the life of me, I cannot tell the difference between the two, except
that the Generic has a smaller dead zone and therefore requires pinpoint
accuracy when calibrating. But assuming they are both calibrated properly,
I see and feel no difference when driving.

Same here with my Montego A3D soundcard, which has an accelrated digital
port much like the PDPI. Works much better with the Direct Input version
than the optimised.
