GPL- Controller setting-Directinput or Generic?

What is the difference in performance or response between Directinput and
Generic setting for controller. Does one have more dead zone?

The DirectInput is using Win9x's DirectX routines and will have whatever
"deadzone" is incorporated in it. Along with all of the other
"downsides" inherent in DirectX.

The generic setting is Papyrus' direct polling of the controller card
port and is very similar to their excellent DOS routines.  This one also
seems to provide a "larger" scale for the reading of the input.

With DirectInput, I was able to run with a higher "linear" setting, but
I didn't feel I had the same precision I got with the generic setting
with less linear setting.

I think the latter choice will depend on the quality of your game
controller and controlling device.  Whether there is a difference in the
overhead, I don't know.  But for my book, Papyrus has it right and
MickeySoft has it wrong.

And....assuming you are the Lou above with the phenomenally low frame rates,
don't expect much from either setting.  The quality of the steering and
control is directly related to frame rates.

T3 plugged into a SB PCI 128 joystick port.

For all the life of me, I cannot tell the difference between the two, except
that the Generic has a smaller dead zone and therefore requires pinpoint
accuracy when calibrating.  But assuming they are both calibrated properly,
I see and feel no difference when driving.

Not entirely accurate, i think. When a program accesses joystick
data through DirectInput, you can tell DirectInput to report the
raw calibration data without doing any of that deadzone rubbish to
it, just like how the joystick calibration control panel thingy works.
I believe this is what Papy do. I think the reason people find
the default DirectInput values giving less response than the Optimised
is due to the DirectInput code just not being so good or something
like that. But if you have a custom gamecard such as the PDPI L4,
then you have to pick the DirectInput routines to get best response,
since that then uses the drivers to read the gamecard's processed
digital readings. Selecting Optmised mode in GPL while using an L4
results in the gamecard reverting to standard analog mode and losing
the benefits of digital.

Cheerio,
Grant.

Same here with my Montego A3D soundcard, which has an accelrated digital
port much like the PDPI.  Works much better with the Direct Input version
than the optimised.

If there is a specific, taylor made driver for your controller in Win95 then the direct
input should work ok.

On my SoundBlaster Live! I -have- to use the DirectInput routines. The
generic routines don't seem to "see" that joystick port.

Kinda the same for me and my Montego, it does see it using the Optimized but
it is real "bouncy".  But in N2 from DOS it works just fine as a "regular"
gameport, so it does work without going through Direct Input, but not so
well in GPL.
