I am having a similar problem, but I have no option re: joystick setting (mine
only works under "generic"). Never am I getting over 6 fps. Here's my solution:
Back to EB tomorrow and get my $36 back. I am disappointed; the demo ran so
well. I'm really getting tired of crapware, and I don't have time to search
Dejanews and racing sites to figure how to get somebody's garbage to run. I
eagerly await MS CPR II.

Hi,

I've configured GPL to use the Generic controller instead of DirectInput to
take advantage of the a 2 joystick setup ie. brake and throttle on separate
axis... This works OK, but when go into training mode (or any mode for that
matter) I only get 12fps (ie. hit Alt-F).... Using the DirectInput I have no
problems ie. get 35fps (as you'd expect)...

Any help is muchly appreciated...

This isn't exactly the same situation, but I figured I'd throw this
out here too since I also had a problem with the generic driver.

I switched from the Direct Input to generic after reading some posts
here saying it was better. It didn't affect my framerate, but it was
undriveably twitchy, and made braking nearly impossible with
practically no pedal travel between brakes on and brakes locked.
(I have to use single axis for brakes/gas since I have a T2)
I did recalibrate after changing the settings.

I switched back to Direct Input, and it locked my PC up solid.
Rebooting got everything back to normal and working fine with Direct
Input. Weird...

I agree, i mean, GPL is only the greatest sim ever made, by the best sim
racing company in the world, you'd think sierra would know better than to
market junk like that :). Crapware indeed, its so crap, that all your
problems are all hardware related (if software, notthing to do with gpl)!,
and i havent noticed any bugs.. what good is that? I agree take it back, get
a good quality product like M$ CPR 2, judging from the first one, it should
be incredible.

What soundcard/game controller are you using.  It looks more like either
a hardware issue or a configuration problem.  Are there any I/O
conflicts?  Is your soundcard's gameport at the default address
(201-201)?

If you can't use the DirectInput, then I would assume that your system
is not configured properly (DirectX?).  Don't blame the software for
problems that may rest in your system configuration or hardware.

If you are only getting 6fps, I would assume the real problem is that
you don't have a 3DFX or Rendition video card.  If so, then Sierra
deserves a sound thrashing for not including such in their "minimum"
requirements:
Windows 95/98
166mhz Pentium
32 meg RAM
Windows 95/98 compatabile video card with 2mb of memory
2x CD-ROM

The above "minimum" is a JOKE!  Yeah, it might actually run with the
above configuration, but it would be pathetic.  They should have been
honest and said that a 3DFX or Rendition card is part of the minimum
requirements, instead of "preferred".

The enquiring mind would wonder why their system, running the same
software, delivered such hugely different results from everyone
else's, and look into what the problem really is.

The uninquiring mind heads back to EB, swaps GPL for some genuine
"crapware" and settles back blissfully unaware of what he's missing.

Mind you, it's probably for the best - if you don't have time to
figure out what's wrong with your system you won't have the free time
for GPL - once it gets it's hooks into you there's no putting it down!
:-)

Cheers!

Well, the original post said:

I've never had CPR on my system, and I've seen similar framerate
differences between the DirectInput and Generic driver selections.
With DirectInput, I'll see 36fps in Training Mode, but only 17fps, in
the same portion of a track, with the Generic driver selected.

It's not a big deal to me, as I'm having no problems using the
DirectInput driver, but I'm just curious why this is occurring.

My system is:
PII 300 (Dell Dimension XPS D300)
64MB RAM
TB Montego
(2) Orchid R3D-II 12MB in SLI
Matrox Millennium II AGP
CH GameCard3
DX 5.2
TSW with throttle/brake on separate axes

I wonder if you actually have the game port on your soundcard disabled
totally.  Win95/8 might think it isn't being used, but "generic" may
actually be trying to poll both devices.  Just a shot in the dark...

Well, I have no idea how the polling might work.  Here's some more
info:

Win95 Device Manager has the TBS Montego Gameport Interface "X'd out",
says it is Disabled, and is not using any Resources.  Device Manager
also says the Gameport Joystick (its name for the CH GameCard 3) is
"working properly" and its Resource Settings are an Input/Output range
of 0201-0201, with no conflicts.  So, it appears that the Montego
gameport is not part of this loop, unless I'd need to Remove it from
Device Manager.  But then, Device Manager will probably just reinstall
it next time I reboot.

I don't recall seeing any posts about these two drivers before, so I'm
wondering if anyone else has had similar framerate differences as
mentioned above, or not.

Hmm, I get an opposite type of deal. With the direct input driver
I get a brief screen flash at the beginning of Curva Grande and entering
Parabolica followed by a hard twitch to the right. I switched to the
Generic driver and all is well. No decrease in framerate here. Gotta
love that Rendition.

Ditto.  Had the same probs w/ Direct Input on my box.  Seems to be the same
problem I had in the Windows 95 version of ICR2.

I was going to say that the Montego card has a digital gameport and this operates thru
direct input. But from what you say about it being disabled, and by the sounds of it your
plugged into a gamecard, not possible. That gamecard isn't digi is it?

Not to my knowledge.  It's been around for a few years, and nothing in
the doc mentions anything about it being digital, so I'd say it's a
safe bet that it's not.

Don't know if this would also make any difference, but I also
installed DX6 last night (for reasons having nothing to do with GPL or
this thread), and the arms of the driver in the incockpit view are
much twitchier than I recall with DX5.  This doesn't seem to translate
much into a twitchier control, but maybe just a little.
