GPL: Where's my generic input driver?

by Uwe Schuerka » Fri, 29 Jun 2001 14:32:40

Hi folks,

I set up a new machine yesterday for gpl, using Windoze98SE,
DX8a and Liveware 3.0 drivers for my SBLive! Value. Everything
went as nicely as one can expect with these things, but now a
couple of things really bug me:

- for some reason, I cannot select the generic joystick driver
  any more, only direct input

- the direct input calibration for my tsw2mod split axis gives
only very small calibration values, say 4-400 for the wheel
and 40-180 for both axes. Is this normal?

The new machine has onboard sound which I disabled in the BIOS,
so the SB16 emulation of the sblive loads fine. (don't know if
that has to do anything with the above problem, just guessing)

I really prefer the generic joystick driver with gpl, usually
supplying calibration values in the tens of thousands. I'd be
most grateful for any pointers or ideas what might be causing
this.

Thanks in advance for your time,

Uwe

Did you reinstall GPL? You need to do that if you reinstall windows
IIRC. Some vxd's need to be registred I think.

Cheers,

My PDPI gamecard - which uses direct input - goes only up to 255, so I would
guess the values you get are normal. SBLive! Value might work better with
the Generic Driver though.

I had same thing happening to me some time ago. I would backup my GPL driver
directory, delete a player in GPL and create a new one then copied all files
in new dir. It normally worked after this...  It is probly just some glitch
in driver.cfg or some similar files.

I agree with you .. generic driver really seems to work better and is above
all independant from values in calibration in control panel.

Hope this helps

Mike

Does anyone know if there's a way to make the direct input work
better, like generic does?

I somehow can't get my wheel+pedal calibrated with generic (it won't
calibrate my pedals) but the driving with generic is MUCH better! Any
ideas how to make that direct input work better?

Many thanks to martin for the hint: yes, you have to re-install gpl in
order to use the generic joystick thing. I installed to sierra/gpl_new
and then all was fine even with the original gpl dir I had copied over
from my previous install, including all the add-ons, no-cd patch and
the like.

Thanks folks, I'm happy again!

Uwe try putting the 'papyjoy.sys' and the 'papycpu.sys' files in your
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS folder these files are put in by the gpl
installer
