GPL Directinput/Generic?

by Kevin Barne » Thu, 03 May 2001 23:31:44

Can someone help me please. For some reson I can only select Direct input as
my driving preferance. If i try Generic I cant calibrate my wheel. I have a
Guillemong Ferrari wheel and voodoo5 running on a pIII 500 system. What is
my problem, Im sure I had the choice originally. Which is best? I was just
trying to give Generic a go to see if it solves a few minor problems i get
from time to time.
Hope someone can help
Thanks

Nothing wrong, GPL cannot see the modern USB & FF wheels direct (which is
the generic setting) it has to use direct X and the windows game controllers
(direct setting). Basically to use generic setting you'd need a standard
gameport wheel.

Okay, so why can't my system see my gameport wheel since I reinstalled
Win98SE?  There's a "Creative Gameport Joystick" device installed OK...

Without knowing which wheel it is I'd have absolutely no idea.
If your wheel requires specific drivers though, that would be a good
starting point. Then you'll of course need to tell windows which wheel
you're using.

It's an Interact V3, which operates as a regular PC joystick.  It
used to work fine on Generic before I invoked the dread
incantation "format c:"...

Only thing I can think of is to try deleting control.cfg (or just rename it)
from your player folder, then start GPL and try to calibrate it again.

I have same problem. After reinstalling Win98 i can't use "generic"
driver anymore. Before reinstall it worked fine. Maybe re-installing
GPL would help, but since my wheel (TM Sprint) works fine with directx
driver i see no reason.

Well, I'll try the suggestion in the other recent reply to this thread
(if I find some time soon!); my other idea is to try installing the legacy
DOS drivers (e.g. by doing a "restart in MS-DOS mode") and see
if that works.

I think it's a whole joystick port thing, since a small QBasic program
fails to read anything off the joystick either.

Will keep you posted if I get it fixed.

yep, re-installing gpl helps! Just install to a different directory
\sierra\gpl_new and the installation process will drop a file called
"papyjoy.sys" into your windoze system thingy, then all should be fine
again.  I have not tried deleting the new installation afterwards, but
certainly it's 130 megs well spent. DirectX input is far inferior
compared to the generic driver, just what you would expect from
microsoft.

Hope that helps,

uwe

In what way is it inferior Uwe? I never tried the generic drivers, I
vaguely remember that I couldn't select them on my former system.
I don't seem to have any response problems with the DX input, but I'm
allways interested in any improvements I can make..

no

Sorry about the late follow-up, but I *finally* (!) solved this one by
adding a DOS driver for my soundcard (with onboard joystick port) to
Autoexec (sbinit.exe I think).  Worked fine after that.
