A longshot- are you using glide 2.53? if not put it in your gpl
directory

I think all of the possible solutions have been suggested. This just
seems odd. The only time I have had GPL lockup on me during calibration
was when I was using Glide drivers that were newer than the 2.53
version.
1) Try running GPL in software acceleration mode and calibrate. Exit
GPL and then run it with your 3d card's acceleration mode.
2) Make sure you have poll with interrupts unchecked in the "advanced"
tab of the Win98 games controller setup.
3) Try using ProPanel instead of the Games Controller to setup your
wheel

4) Try using the Thrustmaster Nascar Pro instead of the F1 as your type
of wheel.
5) You might need to try using a "generic" mouse driver for Win98 to
see if this solves the problem.
6) Try selection "generic" over "direct" for you options of controller
inside GPL.
